Much as I like Mr. Shatner, no, I don't think that the very nature of the Star Trek universe is contingent upon him. The Celtic Twilight theme which suffuses the entire Lord of the Rings is contingent upon the elves. The theme of exploration in Star Trek is not contingent on Captain Kirk -- the theme continues to exist without him. The theme of Celtic Twilight does not exist without the elves. Now, if, as they proposed at one point, warp speed travel was no longer possible, that would kill the universe because the theme of exploration is contingent upon it.
Now, again, I suppose you could tell stories about... life on the Klingon homeworld or something but at that point, it wouldn't really be the Star Trek universe anymore.
Middle Earth without elves or magic is very much analogous to the Star Trek universe without interstellar travel: ie. NOT.
And I'm sorry you didn't like my analogy.
