Isle of Dread - your experiences?

And another thing, for some reason here in Texas at least, it has become a joke to me and some of my other gaming friends that no matter which "Half-Priced Books" (a used bookstore chain in Texas) you go into anywhere in the state, you will find at least one copy of X1. And if you buy that same said copy, another one will magically appear in the store within a month. The store might not have any other modules, hell, they might not have any other RPG stuff at all, but they will have a copy of X1.

I would hazard a guess that X1 was the single most printed adventure modules of all time. If not it's second only to B2.

I was not aware of this. Why did it get such a high printing run?
X1 is the only module aside from the original monochrome adventures that was released with two different covers (blue cover on printing 1-3, red cover on printing 4). I don't know if this has anything to do with the amount of the total printings, since several others also had multiple printings.

Check out http://acaeum.com/DDIndexes/ModPages/X.html for more info on the various printings.

We were there for 4 or 5 levels. We traded off DMs three times. Fought off rampaging hordes with the natives, battled pirates on the high seas, hunted dinos just because.

Our thief died with his arm in a giant oyster.

A cleric was picked up by a pteradactyl while climbing to the plateau, and the wizard just had to try out his new Lightning Bolt. The pteradactyl died, and the cleric screamed all the way to the jungle floor...

There was a rival party in the final dungeon that was one of our greatest battles ever.

Lots of good times.

PS

Isle of Dread was one of the defining adventures in my campaign (next to Spelljammer: Goblin's Return and Heart of the Enemy). They ended up befriending the Rakasta tribe, and the tribal shaman ended up leaving with the party to see the rest of the world...

Oh, and I can't WAIT for the next issue of DUNGEON! A poster map of the Isle of Dread, as well as 3.5 info for it, and one of the adventures will be set on the IOD!!

I remember X1 because it kicked off my first ever CAMPAIGN (look ma, I'm all growed up!) though to be honest, looking back now, I don't think it was that great.

We ended up with a party full of Rakasta dual-wielding magical bladed gauntlets.

God help me, I was only thirteen...

I've used this module many times in the pastm it is a great way for folks to get eaten by a dinosaur. Everytime I've DM'd a party there I don't think they ever really got close to "finishing" it. I was schocked once when i was on the Isle of Dread as a PC and the party I was with stumbled onto most of the big points in the module (i was a good doobie and didn't act out of character) so we pretty muc "finished" it. good module.
