Isle of Dread - your experiences?

Sigh. That's back when hex paper was in fashion for wilderness maps. The nostalgia....

you can blame Outdoor Survival by Avalon Hill and the nature of wargaming on that carryover...

i may be using the isle, the PCs have the option to take part in an expedition to go there. An Ex-PC extra hexed-hexblade [naturals 1s AND 2s are fumbles for all creatures in the geographic region he occupies / the player started like this & liked it a lot] is also heading in that direction with a monster-attracting semi artifact. The other players are not sure if they want to pursue such a risky endevor.

I have very fond memories of this module. It was one of the first long term campaigns I ran. I placed the Judges guild module “Caverns of Thracia” on the “Isle of Dread.” It worked out very nicely.
With new map, which is neat though I was hoping for something more old school with hexes, and the pending revised versions of the “Caverns of Thracia” from Necromancer, I might just revisit that idea some 18 years later.

Heading into the heart of the island that has more meat eating dinos than hairs on a yeti? Don't leave without the Leather Armor of Bad Taste! Glantrian wizards are hard at work developing this armor from troglodite skin and ghast essence.

Of couse make sure you are not violating the creatures territory, otherwise it might still bite you in two and spit you up. BUT! with our down the hatch garrentee, IF you are killed and eaten while wearing this armor, and the monster doesn't vomit you up, just return it intact and a full refund will be given. And as a special bonus, we have clerics that might be able to get you back on your feat. Just have your party bring your remains to the gentleman with the skull headed mace.

Just wondering, was the original X1 module set on the World of Greyhawk, or was it part of the Known World? I ask because the Dungeon article places it firmly on Oerth, but I was sure it was part of Mystara.

When I ran "Isle of Dread" back in high-school, I set it off the coast of Ansalon and the PCs had to track down a renegade Black Robe.

The PCs found the adventure incredibly boring (all those jungle monsters to hack'n'slash your way through; plus I was a novice GM) until the last encounter on the plateau. There, the adventure really took off and I still have fond memories of it to this day.

I recall a web spell being cast and all the natives being caught in it. Then a fireball incinerated them all. The black robe managed to flee and he was encountered again back on the mainland.

Third adventure I ever ran for 3.0 was Isle of Dread, converted in an afternoon.

The players loved it. THe stakes were hgih, the monsters big and bad, and the nearest town was just a bunch of low-tech natives with an undead problem.

:)

by the time X1 came out D&D and ADnD had firmly split.

X1 was on the Known World.

the map for the Known World came out a couple years later.
