Lets hope so it reads linear and you dont have to search 8 different places to understand a rule.Is the core book going to be both the PH and the DMG?
I think the 5e dmg is especially lacking in a lot of areas that could be done better, but there's so much that we only know as bullet points on a goals list at this point. It might be premature to talk about a discrete dmg at this point before we find out what/how much changes and if we are more likely to wind up with a PF style tome length CRB or more in the 5e phb style sub300 page range CRB. Also it's not uncommon to have the phb & dmg published months apartIs the core book going to be both the PH and the DMG?
Well, as long as it has a better index than the 5e books. Which, let's face it, would not be hard to do.Lets hope so it reads linear and you dont have to search 8 different places to understand a rule.
I could pick up a random 5E book, open a any page, blindly point and I'd have a better chance of finding what Im looking for than if I consulted a 5E index.Well, as long as it has a better index than the 5e books. Which, let's face it, would not be hard to do.
A thought occurred to me after reading this thread, I'm not saying this should be done with Level Up, but perhaps down the road. Someone on the board here asked a 5E question about a running jump with a ring of jumping. An hour later after flipping back and forth through the PHB and DMG I pieced together the answer, seems excessive to me. I wonder if a CRB would better serve by putting the players information and the DMs information in the same chapter, on the same page where it make sense as long as they're both designated accordingly. Also giving reference pages where the latter isn't feasible would be great too.I think the 5e dmg is especially lacking in a lot of areas that could be done better, but there's so much that we only know as bullet points on a goals list at this point. You mainly want to avoid redundancy. You don't need to have jumping rules in three (movement rules, the jump spell, and the ring of jumping) or more places. Having the reference pages, either in the text, in a margin like with the Cypher System books, or as a footnote, would be very helpful, though.A thought occurred to me after reading this thread, I'm not saying this should be done with Level Up, but perhaps down the road. I think the jump silliness is a victim of 5e's "natural language boondoggle" & jump is a great example of using "natural language" to complicate a trivial bit of crunch to reductio ad absurdum levels of complexity. back in 3.5 jump had pretty straightforward rules for how it works when you use the jump skillA thought occurred to me after reading this thread, I'm not saying this should be done with Level Up, but perhaps down the road.
