It Starts (Splatbooks - Martial Power in October)

First Post
We've heard of the Tome of Treasures. Now we've got Blood and Fist or Complete Warrior for 4th edition:

Martial Power

If you want to live in a world where D&D only has the core rulebooks there's a very short window to play. One advantage to being an 'early adopter' I guess.

Mideast Tensions Increase.
Hollywood Marriage On The Rocks.
Pope Condemns Sin.
Blizzards Paralyze Northeast.
Dog Bites Man.
RPG Breeds Splatbooks.

I'm annoyed we'll need to wait till October to see the new crunch. A major test of a system is how well it handles expansion. Three years to design/playtest the core rules is one thing, but how well will the system handle new material with a much shorter design cycle? That's when we see it triumph or fail...

I would guess that we'll see new crunch on launch day via D&DI.

I'm fairly excited about 4e. I see a bunch of things I like, and I wasn't expecting that. However, I just don't know if I'm up for the supplement merry-go-round to start up again. I might pass on everything but the PHBs, DMGs, and MMs. I'll probably subscribe to DDI too. That seems like plenty to keep the game fresh and invigorated.

Thaumaturge.

Of course, it may not be "new" material - it could easily be material that has already been playtested along with the '08 Core Books, but couldn't be fit in. Probably less true as we get other splatbooks farther out, but not unlikely at this stage.

Yeah, but that's most likely crunch developed over three years and then trimmed for space. I'm not saying that MP isn't likely already half-written, but it's going to have a shorter dev time than the core rules...and the next supplement, even less.

I'm planning to get by on just the original 3 books - or I was. I may now have to pick up whatever book(s) include the druid (my favourite class since 2nd ed) and the bard (favourite class of one of my players), but that's it. Unless...

Dash it! They're sucking me in all over again!

Eh, I hardly ever pick up the splat books, but I might this time, for the reasons Lizard posted. I'm curious to see how it's handled. If it adds to the game without being "tacked on" and stays reasonably balanced, then I will be nicely surprised and probably buy the others.

Though I have to save some cash for some sort of D20 Modern game. I only have the original 3.0 one from WotC and need to find a grittier one now that my group may play again soon (lethal damage, armor as DR, cinematic play, etc.). Er, sorry. Rambling. :)

Drifting off topic -- I am falling in love with Spycraft 2.0. Haven't played, but other than the armor-as-DR, it can be as lethal and cinematic as you want with the built in options. Support has been...spotty, but some very cool supplements have just come out.

I'm going to take a guess that the Monk will be in here.

No, I don't have a shred of evidence, but I really want it to have the Monk
