its been stated that only PHB, PHB II Phb III, etc will have new classes. DDI will also have them. Splatbooks such as complete martial, etc won't; they will only expand on maneuvers, powers, feats, etc.
Citation, please. I've never seen WotC say this.

I've run every edition of D&D with the core rules only and I doubt 4e will make me change my ways. The way of endless splat books lies madness.

We agree.

I've never had a problem saying 'no' to splatbooks and add-ons. Of course, I don't ALWAYS say no -- it's sometimes fun to experiment.

BUT!! If the basic game isn't sound (which to most would translate as 'fun'), it's not worth my time experimenting with the expansions.

Years after 4E debuts, you can still play the game with just the first 3 books.

Thing is, the more cultural baggage you add, the less generic a class is. Bards in 3e cover a wide range of archetypes; tying them explicitly to the Fay seems to limit them a lot. I'd rather they be Arcane.

I'd really rather bards be divine, if the distinction is meaningful. They were that way in AD&D 1e, and the "cultural baggage" (i.e. folklore and archetypes) describe them as holy folk. The pickpocket-minstrel-illusionist archetype is an AD&D 2e invention, and not a welcome one. Something more like the spellthief would make more sense if you wanted to pursue that archetype.

Yeah, I'd like to see a cite for this as well. I don't recall WotC stating anything of the sort.

They could be a Primal Leader – in touch with Fey and all that; bring them back to their kick-ass Celtic roots.

Is the Primal power source associated with the Fey? From Worlds and Monsters it seems that arcanists have a close connection to the Feywild.

Heck, I'd bet a lot that the Arcane power source book features three new classes -- swordmage (arcane defender), bard (arcane leader), and sorcerer (arcane controller).

If you want to live in a world where D&D only has the core rulebooks there's a very short window to play.

This was true of 2.5, as well. Those "X & Y" class splats were printed right out of the gate, right? That didn't seem to hurt the market much for third party publishers.
