D&D 5E It Took Us a Nearly a Year to Complete "When a Star Falls"

Recently, my "Primordial Evil" campaign (an in-person group that meets until recently met every 3 to 5 weeks for 5 hours, but now meets every 3 weeks for 3 hours) completed my own conversion of UK4 - When a Star Falls (using the QftIS version to fill in blanks when I finally got my hands on it).

The party got their first indication of the hook (dream-visions about the fallen star) in Session #17 (which we played on June 15, 2024) and began the actual adventure the session after. They completed it a couple of months ago - Session 27, played on April 27, 2025 (with an kind of epilogue session involving the Deck of Many Things following it) and then had their first session of a new arc begin last night.

All told that was 10 sessions (we can call it ten and a half) involved in a multi-part adventure that I will admit was stretched out some due to the elements I added/changed to make the module fit our campaign events better. Another thing that slowed it down was that TWICE during this adventure the party was defeated and taken captive (under 2 very different circumstances) and had to work to free themselves and recover their gear.

In that time the PCs were awarded XP in session #17 (at the end of the previous adventure, right before this one) and again in session #27 (after When a Star Falls was completed). They went from 4th to 5th level.

While I do wish we could play more often and for longer (Ideally, we'd play every 2 weeks for 4 to 5 hours - but that just isn't in the cards for any of us), the actual pace of what is happening in the sessions is one that I like. The previous two short adventures (which were bound together via location, so not easy to separate out) took 7 sessions to conclude.

Anyway, I don't really have an argument or a question. . . I just thought it'd be interesting to share how long it took my group to complete When a Star Falls, since it is one others have easier access to now that it has been reprinted for 5E - so serves as potential point of comparison despite some differences in play (esp. given that no adventure, in my experience, ever plays out exactly as written).

You might be the person to ask this since you just ran UK4.

Have you run UK1 (Beyond the Crystal Cave)? Recently, and/or in 5e? Genuinely curious about this. I ran it several times (1e) in ... well, back when it was written. And it was mind-blowing at the time, mostly because it was a "non-combat" module (not exactly, but if you've run it you know what I mean).

If you have, how did it translate into modern play? How long did it take?

I own it, but have not run it since maybe 1988. . . there is a 5E adaptation of it in Quests from the Infinite Staircase, but I have not spent any time with it.

/facepalm Should have remembered they put it in QFTIS. Thanks for the reminder!

If anyone else is reading this, I'd be curious to hear what their experience with it in 5e was. All I have are very very old memories.

I ran the Infinite Staircase version of both these adventures (“When a Star Falls” and “Beyond the Crystal Cave”) for my episodic Eberron campaign recently.

We enjoyed both adventures. As I recall, the group was pretty thorough with Star Falls, but they skipped much of the Eternal Garden content. It was still a lot of fun, though.

IIRC Crystal Cave took us two, maybe three, sessions to complete. Star Falls took four? I’ll have to look at my notes.

EDIT: In case you’re interested, here are our embellished adventure recaps:
