"The" Satanic Panic was a moral panic. One of many, of which some of today's share seeds and common elements of older ones.
American society seems to hit a nadir every 30-40 years. The 1950's were primitive and repressed, and so were the 80's through early 90's. And now it's happening again

It's like Ghostface from Scream. New people keep taking up the mantle of the same old evil. That said I'd rather have Ghostface lopse in my town than a bunch of sanctimonious wet blankets and self-described concerned parents. At least Ghostface supports free speech.

EDIT:
And speaking of horror movies and the satanic panic, did you all know apparently that most horror movies were banned in England for most of the 90's, unless they were phenomenally tame. To give you an idea of how tame it was all set off by a movie called The Driller Killer; That film is now in the public domain so I looked it up and it's BORING, but it was too intense for the satanic panic era UK

Apparently it's because of pressure from the credit card companies again

Don't know how much good it'll do but I found a petition

In the meantime I'm going to have to look into getting different credit card. Visa and Mastercard can go to Hell.

Maybe I'll get an Amex card instead

The real problem is that for some inexplicable reason the credit card companies aren't yet legally classified as common carriers. They're moving money around for you they should face the same restrictions as people moving freight or data or phone calls around.
The legal reason is they don't fit the legal definition of common carriers

Then the definition needs to be expanded

(ugh. now I have to write to my ----ing congressman too)
  • Common Carriers: Traditional common carriers like railroads, airlines, and even telephone companies, offer services to the general public for transportation or communication, indiscriminately. They are legally obligated to serve all who seek their services, within their capacity and reasonable terms.
Credit card companies, on the other hand, provide financial services, extending credit and facilitating payments, according to Linbis Logistics Software. They don't typically transport goods or messages in the same way as traditional carriers. They have the discretion to choose which customers they will offer credit to and on what terms, based on creditworthiness and other factors.
Different regulatory framework
  • Common Carriers: Common carriers are subject to specialized regulations that dictate their operations, liability, and duty of care. These regulations often focus on ensuring fairness, non-discrimination, and public access to their essential services.
  • Credit Card Companies: Credit card companies are primarily regulated as financial institutions, subject to laws governing lending, consumer protection, and financial transactions, according to PerformLine
