Do they exist? I don't know where you are, but all the high street banks here in the UK use those. Maybe some of those posh banks which charge you to bank with them have some other way of doing it, but I'm not sure the pay terminals in the shops and ATMs will work if you don't have a Visa or Mastercard logo on your card. And Amex isn't taken anywhere.

They used to have an alternative here called 'Switch' (debit only) but I haven't seen that in years. Maybe it was phased out.
I'm admittedly having trouble finding a place that does them, but Wikipedia claims that debit is also done through UnionPay, American Express, Discover, STAR, JCB, and Pulse

EDIT:
It looks like I might be able to get a discover debit card with Capital One

I wonder how the whole age verification thing is going to work out with steam and itch.
They should harken back to Leisure Suit Larry. When you booted the game up, you were presented with questions no young person would know.

@MGibster That assumes people are thinking for themselves and not using AI or other search engines.

As for the change.org petition, that's pointless. What we need is legislative change. We have yet to see the results of "Stop destroying videogames", but it already had a greater impact than any online petition.

Visa/MC are de facto duopoly at this point when it comes to debit cards. Almost all banks use them, they are accepted pretty much everywhere in the world and work with all atm/pos machines. When it comes to card networks, they got it covered. There are alternative payment gateways that automate and process direct payments, but when it comes to cards, those are locked.

@MGibster

Yeah, i remember LSL from the old pre google days. That damn baseball question is hard for most people outside USA, no matter how old they are.

In my experience the rules and regulations impacting one payment processor in the U.S. most likely will impact them all rather quickly. Whether or not it’s a credit or debit network or bug or small company. In terms of lawsuit avoidance typically the smaller companies are much more risk averse. Meaning it will likely be the big ones that fight this if anyone.

The question at present seems more to be whether some of this content technically violates laws that govern what every payment processor/facilitator must follow.
