Item Cost: Ring Belt

personally ive never liked the two rings thing. i mean from a game mechanics issue i understand it. but whats the rp reasons is it that only one ring per hand can be active? i mean seems like you could put one or more on each finger. yea over balance issues but just my two cents

Yes, you can wear twenty rings if you really want to.

The RP reason that multiple rings cannot be active is pretty simple in my mind.
Magic is volatile. Casters take the majority of their lives to understand the Weave and how it works to grasp at just a small glimmer of it's potential. The potential for backlash is impressive, it is immensely difficult to control, and it can be extremely deadly for the caster.

Do you really want your half-retarded Barbarian trying to use that power any more than he already does?

I don't know if it has ever been a rule... but I've always played that if you have more than one ring PER HAND, then neither of the rings work.

My campaign has been that way since the start... (This way, when you eventually stick your hand in that hole and it gets lopped off, you lose the ring...)

The biggest difference between the Hand of Glory and the item you want to create is that you are actually gaining a slot. (The hand takes a slot and essentially turns it into a different type of slot). Which essentially doubles the value of an item placed in this new slot (as otherwise it would have to be created slotless, which doubles the item's cost).

How valuable is an extra slot? As was pointed out, an epic feat can grant an extra slot. I generally peg regular feats as worth around 10k or so (roughly) myself, assuming that there aren't prereqs. An epic one should be worth more than that. How much more? I think 30-40k would be a good number for one which doesn't have a bunch of prereqs. As was also pointed out there is also the extra rings feat, which which isn't epic and has a prereq of Forge Ring as well, so this is probably at the low end of the Epic range. I think 30k for an extra slot is not an unreasonable number.

So I'd probably make a belt like this 38k (8k to get a similar effect to the Hand of Glory, and another 30k for the extra slot).

As to the sword from the Arms and Equipment Guide, it is probably undercosted, in my opinion. As I don't have the book handy right now, there may be some hidden limitations there as well - i.e. the sword may have to be in hand (which can limit its usefulness, in some cases, and also makes the sword and ring easier to disable, via disarm, sunder, falling unconscious, etc.).

The DMG suggests you can wear any number of magic rings that you can fit on your hand, however only one per hand will ever be active at one time.
This way, you could have ten Use Activated or Command Word rings on your hand without having to worry about switching them on and off all the time depending on situations.

It's more of a time saver / convenience thing than a solid RP / Game Balance issue.

I recognize that rule... I was just explaining the one we use.

Excellent. This is the type of advice I've been looking for. I think that you are right, and I came up with 36,000 a bit ago... I think that might be under as well.

The caster IMC thinks it is a little high for him (typical that you go and do the research just to have someone say that the price is too high). Now he wants to make a belt with one ring... and then ADD a ring at a later date. Upgrading items has a precedent in the game, so I'm allowing it...

I'm going to price the one ring belt around 12,000 to 16,000 (just because).
