Item-swapping: what to do about it?

Wondering why the wizard was looking over the rogue's shoulder when the trap goes off.

Doesn't really need to be with area of effect spells and magical traps.

I think it's great that they are willing to work that well together. HOWEVER, the fact that this is such a "recurring" issue for you means that something may just be falling too much into a familiar pattern. One of the previous posters mentioned a great idea about how if the rogue is loaded up with all the stuff as he goes off to undo a trap, the rest of the party gets attacked from behind... or rather, encounters should encourage participation from all members more often as opposed to having their characters idle while someone else is off doing the main thing.

(Yes, I understand that this is not how it _always_ is. just saying if the situation is coming up enough to be a recurring problem.. or at least to the point that the players are used to/ expecting it then it may be worth it to shake it up a bit).

Seems realistic to me. Same as buffing up before entering a room you expect to be full of bad guys... The party knows that the survival of each individual member is critical to the survival of each other individual member, and thus the group as a whole. On the other hand, if a player were playing a character who was known to be covetous, cowardly, or complacent, there might be some kind of experience penalty applied if I deemed the action uncharacteristically selfless.

If I was the rogue checking for traps, I would expect my party to be a reasonably safe distance away just in case an area affect trap did go off. If they were caught in the blast if the trap went off, they were either to close (hence looking over my shoulder) or the trap's area affect was larger than expected.

Anyways, my point is that the wizard who gave up his protective items wasn't thinking about his own safety, but the safety of the rogue so probably wouldn't complain.

Do you give your rain jacket to your girlfriend because you see clouds in the sky, then complain when it starts to rain and your left without protection?

:\

Are we using "rain jacket" literally, here?
