Item to increase UMD?

Depending on how lax your DM is, you could always have something like "Bill's Guide to the Use of Items, Magical and Arcane", name it a masterwork tool that provides a +2 circumstance bonus to your UMD skill, and it would cost you 50gp.

This is all open to how you interpret a masterwork tool, though.

Tool, Masterwork
This well-made item is the perfect tool for the job. It grants a +2 circumstance bonus on a related skill check (if any). Bonuses provided by multiple masterwork items used toward the same skill check do not stack.

Hmm. Maybe my artificer could get a masterwork quill to scribe scrolls with... that sounds semi-reasonable.

Sure! There are items that help all sorts of skills, from Climb and Jump to Craft, to Search and Spot, so why not UMD? It's a skill like any other. Use the standard costs for creating such a item as per the GM, no need to change the formula.

Look at mickey mouse in fantasia for inspiration on this one. The sorcerer's apprentice taking the enchanted cap. I would give it a plus to UMD but also have the the chance of a mishap increased. This is of course a just for fun example. There is nothing in the rules to forbid the item but check with your DM first to see if (s)he will allow it.

Is there any precedent items for creating a skill boosting item for Use Magic Device? Should it still simply follow the bonus squared times 100 gp rule?

I allowed a ring of UMD in my campaign, using those guidelines, but I'm pretty generous.

Thanks for all the help and ideas. Now I just need to convince the GM.

Well, if nothing else, try to get your GM to allow a MW tool for the standard +2 bonus. Whether that be some special glove, a book of instructions, or whatever.

Many GMs will not allow a magic item boost to UMD, but MW item is a good way to go and keeps it really under control.
