its a matter of taste, but..mystara or greyhawk?

Doesn't matter: the Keep is sufficiently generic that you can easily insert it into whatever world you want. I've set the Keep in the Shield Lands, in Furyondy near Whyestil Lake, in the Great Kingdom, in the Wild Coast, as a border fort between Greyhawk City and Dyvers, etc. It's like ice cream: you're always happy to see it :D

And while I'd certainly drop it into GH before Mystara, I'm with dialgo that I like the Known World better than Mystara too :D

greyhawk, on the other hand, seems to have lots of cool places and adventures, like the tharizdun or the vault of the drow and teh temple of elemental evil (please do correct me if im wrong about the locations!).

i see both as "old school". i have more mystara material, i think, i i cant stop reading about many adventures by gary gygax set in greyhawk!

I vote Greyhawk, for the reasons you mentioned -- lots of great adventures in that world, and lots of great D&D tradition. Plus there are many avid fans (and Gary himself) here to ask if you want to ping ideas off of the hawk community.

I put my Keep on the Borderlands in Bissel, and I've been built 2 long-lasting campaigns off that basic decision.

Yeomanry also works, or Ratik. Pomarj itself I don't get, but Wild Coast or Principality of Ulek could work. Or the Greyhawk version of the County of Blackmoor, which got a bit more development in the Paizohawk era . . .

While I got started in Greyhawk (and I used to know the City of Greyhawk like the back of my hand, thanks to that wonderful boxed set), I'll say Mystara.

But that's only because of Red Steel!
I'll echo this. If only because Red Steel is my favorite sub-campaign setting of the 2nd Edition era.

Question on Keep on the Borderlands: how to reduce the "monster condo" feel of the Caves of Chaos? Simply increase the scale so the valley is a few miles long?

right. move the cave openings or make the tunnels longer. or change up the timing.

not all the monsters have to be there just sitting in their caves waiting to be killed.

although, some of them should be close enough to each other to have formed alliances or rivalries for the limited resources. as well as being scared of the more nasty caves.

timing is perfect. adventure party A cleans out caves B, D. they come back some time later after spending their loot on ale and whores. now insert monsters from caves G or A or some other into B and D.

edit: it wasn't meant for the party to stay in the area and clear all the caves. they shouldn't be able to in fact. and if they are. you should increase the challenges. so they shouldn't know that the complex is as diverse as it is.

Mystara is a lot simpler, the setting books (if you could find them) are helpful and I have to admit I generally like the artwork better.

What I like about Greyhawk mostly is the adventures that were written for it, but they are easily brought into Mystara with a few minor changes.

Thanks, Deedee!

I know what to do.
