It's Gencon 2000 again but now you have 2 choices.

I actually did come from 2E (although more Skills and Powers - which is like 2.5 tbh) as I never went to 3rd Edition - being a gamer from the eighties by the time 3rd edition arrived I had established players and almost all the AD&D system - including all the realms and core books for realms - so 3rd edition did not seem of interest due to having tons of unused material still to play with.

---that was 8 years ago...

So I decided to move to 4th Edition, partly to try a new system and also to reinvigorate some gamers who knew the rules backwards - and I had just picked up 2 new gamers who would appreciate a new system for all (rather than being intimidated by people who could quote books chapter and verse)

Kinda enjoying it, but will not get into which is best for many reasons - the principal one being I think they are all just mechanics by which you run a game and they shouldn't interfere with the fun of socialising with friends and beating up the nearest -creature- raiding party :)

How is this not an edition wars thread?

Anyways, I don't see how the framing of the question changes my view much. I view 1e-2e-3e as a continuous metasetting. The excisement and alteration of much of the defining characteristics of the game would have made 4e unappealing to me then much as now.

If I could choose 4e in 2000 (and therefore choose that it will be the game WotC supports), then the reasons why I'll still play 3.5 would be invalid (those being a vast library of existing 3.x stuff and some players/DMs in my group who think 4e's kind of interesting mechanically but don't really want to learn a new edition).

I have to admit, though, that unless I really disliked what WotC (or TSR, way back when) was putting out, I'd rather be playing the supported edition; I like flipping through new stuff too much. And that Dave's Ideal Fantasy RPG would probably be somewhat different from either game (though my opinion of what that is has changed over the years).
