It's good class, but nobody plays it!

I DM for 4 player party with 7 PC deaths so far.

No Bards, no Paladins, no fighters (?!?). VERY FEW SINGLE CLASSED CHARACTERS.

everyone wants L1 ot be a Rogue, or a Barbarian.

all depends on the campaign

All depends on the campaign. The first character a player creates is based on the player's desires. The second character (after the first one dies or the player becomes bored) is usually based on the player's reaction to the campaign.

If your campaign is always dungeon crawls filled with combat and no traps, you should see lots of fighters.

If it is dungeon crawls filled with traps, you should see rogues.

If it is nature/outdoors, druids and rangers.

You should always see clerics. :) (the best class + healing)

If it is skills based, you might see all sorts of classes with lots of skill points.

etc.

Finally in this new campaign some played a Bard. In 11 years of gaming this is the 1st. Almost everyone multiclasses. I also have only seen one Paladin in 3e. I also have never seen a single class ranger I even modified it a little to make it more appealing.

Tanks and arkanists...

My groups tend to consist of two tanks and two casters. The tanks have included one barbarian, two pallies and a score of fighters (gotta love those feats! ). The casters are most often wizards or sorcerers, with the odd cleric now and then. Every core class has seen use, though, except the ranger. Why on earth would anyone want more than a single level of ranger anyway?!?

No Druids or Bards thus far.

Every DM must endeavor to get a Paladin into their PCs' group - it makes adventure hooks so easy!

So far I've manged to play Cleric, Wizard, Rogue, Paladin, Fighter and Infiltrator (from Kalamar). The character I've enjoyed the most is the wizard. The rogue is dead at the moment so I'm playing the paladin in that campaign for now but I'm hoping for a resurrection since the character is so cool.

I always pour over the classes and I'd really love to try out the druid, ranger and bard too but I can't muster any enthusiasm for some of their powers. The polymorph rules are such a mess I won't even go there. The pass without trace is pointless. The ranger's favored enemy just makes me feel like a racist so it's right out. The versatillity of the bard is nice but they always turn out mediocre at everything they do.

My next character will be a sorcerer with a themed spell-list.

The only 3E character I have played so far (from 1st to 17th level) was a druid. And I have to say, it was just plain fun.

Sure, the cleric might have been the better healer and overall the better fighter - but all the shapeshifting and other abilities made the druid an interesting and versatile character.

Plus, he was probably the most well-liked character - the linchpin who kept the party together...

I did a big survey on these boards about a year and a half ago, and adding together the total levels chosen in each class by the respondents gave the following results:

Fighter 1038 16.6%
Rogue 840 13.5%
Cleric 831 13.3%
Wizard 815 13.1%
Sorcerer 529 8.5%
Ranger 437 7.0%
Monk 403 6.5%
Paladin 374 6.0%
Barbarian 303 4.9%
Bard 275 4.4%
Druid 208 3.3%
Psion 138 2.2%
Psychic Warrior 50 0.8%

The psion and psychic warrior are probably very low because many campaigns won't use psionics for one reason or another.

In my current campaign:

Lysander: Singharese Jazumai (paladin)8 / Sorcerer 1
K'tan: Cadlanian Mage Savant 9
Trajan: Southlander Fighter 4 / Jazumai 4 / iaijutsu master 1
Dala: Southlander Sorcerer 8
Anne-Marie: Sword Coast Fighter 6 / Monk 1
Arilyn: Mendonnan Wizard 6

And the roster of the dead

Miranda, Rog4/Sor1 - critically hit with a shocking burst sword wielded by Skrok, a goblin barbarian chief.
Graculous, Ftr5 - cut down by Skrok.
Blodwyn, Clr2 - fell 100ft to her death.
Ynnsfeardh, Mnk4 - brain eaten by a Mind Flayer
Auriel, Dru5 - infected with wereratism, left the party
Kieran, Ftr2 - cut down by goblin hordes
T’kel, Wiz1 - Run through by Skrok.
Sula, Rgr2* - cut down by the charmed captain of a group of caravan guards
Crail, Rog3/Ftr2 - critically impaled by wererats. Raised, killed by shocking grasp wand misfire, raised, killed by poison trap (wyvern venom)
Azrin, Clr5/Mnk1 - nearly bitten in half by fiendish megaraptor and finished off by her own shield other spell, raised, decapitated by Thrumdill, a rogue metamorph (in trollish form with duo-dimensional bears claws in effect)
Syl, Rog3/Sor2 - Killed by collapsing tunnel while running from huge stone dragon, raised, killed by the quarterstaff of Lareth the beautiful in the temple of elemental evil.

Cheers
