It's Official!

Goliaths rock.

Well, if you don't have the XPH, anyway. Which has half-giants, and they are similar but I like them even better.

I agree, all the names suck...

Dwarf. I mean REALLY. Isn't derogatory to small people or something? "Our defining racial trait is we're short."

Elf: Keebler or Santa elf? Make me some toys.

Gnome: A PC race based on a Lawn Decoration? Sign me up!

Halfling: Yeah, like a race is gonna call themselves that!

Half-elf: Half elf, half what else?

Half-orc: see half-elf.

Come on people, who thought up these names?

I think about starting a little one-shot PbP where only alternate races and classes would be allowed -- goliaths, illumians, raptorians for races; healer, favored soul, hexblade, marshall, ninja, samurai, scout, spellthief, spirit shaman, shugenja, swashbuckler, warlock, warmage, wu jen for classes. Maybe round it up with the changeling, warforged, and artificer from Eberron.

Could be kinda cool. It would be D&D without being D&D, a bit like, say, Arcana Unearthed.

While i dont have a specific problem with the new races none of them could fit IMC in large enough numbers to become a player race.

Sarcasm much appreciated! Needed, even. I did mention in another thread that as silly as these names sound they're undoubtedly not names these races use for themselves. Likely, they are names given by Humans: Raptorans sounds like something a scolarly priest or mage might come up with to describe flying humanoids in some medieval bestiary, while Dwarves and Goliaths are more like names that might spring up from commoners (miners, mountaineers, and so forth).

At first I didn't like the idea of the Raptorans, but now I've read through the description, I like them. I really dislikethe illumians and I really liek the Goliaths.

The names are pants though.

I've been thinking of doing something similar since Races of Stone came out. The Goliaths certainly have enough backstory, which frankly is the advantage of having 1/3 of a book dedicated to them. I have yet to read the fully story on the Ilumians, but I think they would make a great spooky arcane oriented class. I'm also looking forward to the foreign mindset of the Raptorans. Overall I think WotC is doing a good thing by introducing races with full backgrounds and rich cultures.

Doing a humans + new races quick campaign would be a good Sword and Sorcery campaign. The Goliaths fill the traditional barbarian role, the Ilumians reak of 60s plane hopping weirdness, and the Raptorans have a great pulp feel to them.

But verily the names all stink as much as "halflings" does.

Hmm...

These raptorans only make me want to write up my own winged race, the griffon-evolved Aquillans, even more (had them in the back-burner since 2e).

Go for it.

Open material = Good. More likely to be used in my games. (I'm funny that way.)
