It's Official!

Check out Races of Evernor III. I don't remember the name of the race, but there is a race in that e-book that is essentially an evolved griffon-man. I recall them having a +3 or +4 LA, though.

As for whether or not the new races suck, I like the Goliaths. They have seen some use IMC. The Illumians are ok. I'm not overly keen on the letters floating around their heads, but they have an interesting enough story that I am going to try and work them in. Raptorans are interesting IMO. I like the mechanics, but a bit of the backstory will be changed should I decide to include them IMC. (I don't like the whole pact with air elementals part.)

All in all, I'm happy with the Races of books, but they could have been better. I would have preferred to see a book a bit more akin to Mythis Races from FFG. Give me a lot of races, new ideas, conversions of old races, and then fill out the book with PrC's, feats, spells, and so on. I really didn't need pages upon pages of information on dwarf, human, illumian, and goliath way of life. I can do that on my own. The best chapters in each book were the Other Races sections. That's what I would've liked more of.

I don't want any LA. I think I'll be using a racial paragon class to evolve the wings from Jump-boosters to full Fly speed over 3 levels. It also helps that the Aquillans have a deep sense of racial pride, having been magically created from griffons to serve as a slave race, only to kill their wizard creators and throw down the shackles of slavery to form their own sky-tribes.

As I see it, every single adult aquillan gets the 3 racial paragon levels (a side effect of living in an intensive hunting society).

Yeah, that's it. I'll be writing them down for my Pirates of Dark Water/Sinbad archipelago campaign!

That sounds cool. Honestly, I end up writing Racial class levels for all races that have an LA. It's just easier that way for the group with everyone playing on the same footing.

I'd love to see/hear more about your campaign! Anything that's inspired from Pirates of Dark Water is right up my alley!

Races

Goliaths - love'em! They are an excellent, well-thought-out alternative to Half-Ogres. They actually have an interesting appearance and culture. I assume their name for themselves is something like "Gol-Kaa," which is the name of their language.

Others I really like:
Sea Kin - RoD in Other Races chapter
Underfolk - probably not a PC race except in certain settings
Catfolk - though fitting them in anywhere other than the Isle of Dread takes some careful thought

And from other books:
Mythic Races (FFG) - Aaleear (tiny Fey), Anaema (semi-corporeal humans), Mannikins (living constructs before the Warforged were printed), Eleti (who wants to play a skeleton?), Rhonian (marsh bird humanoids with snobbery; it's better than it sounds).

From DragonMech - Tortog (tortoise folk), Slathem (amphibious race that comes across as a bit alien, rather than boringly human with gills), and, especially, Coglings (the BEST adapatation of Halflings ever cnoceived!)

Stormwrack - Aventi are cool, Darfellan are original, and Hadozee add a Star Frontiers flair to the game (think Yazirian, and you won't be too far off. They're ape-like humanoids with patagial flaps for gliding).

Well, I guess this post is long enough!

I still prefer the Rakasta from Mystara (ala the old Dragon article). Another good variant is from Mythic Races. I forget the exact name, but they're a cool cat-race with various subraces.

From DragonMech - Tortog (tortoise folk),

Another variant is the Tortle from Mystara. Dragon did a write-up on them in last year's campaign classics issue.

Don't forget Spelljammer! :)

Hey, on the subject of Death To Stupid Races, has anyone seen WotC pushing Desmondu anymore? Or are those 18 HD guano sacks finally gone?

Thanks, -- N
