Check out Races of Evernor III. I don't remember the name of the race, but there is a race in that e-book that is essentially an evolved griffon-man. I recall them having a +3 or +4 LA, though.
As for whether or not the new races suck, I like the Goliaths. They have seen some use IMC. The Illumians are ok. I'm not overly keen on the letters floating around their heads, but they have an interesting enough story that I am going to try and work them in. Raptorans are interesting IMO. I like the mechanics, but a bit of the backstory will be changed should I decide to include them IMC. (I don't like the whole pact with air elementals part.)
All in all, I'm happy with the Races of books, but they could have been better. I would have preferred to see a book a bit more akin to Mythis Races from FFG. Give me a lot of races, new ideas, conversions of old races, and then fill out the book with PrC's, feats, spells, and so on. I really didn't need pages upon pages of information on dwarf, human, illumian, and goliath way of life. I can do that on my own. The best chapters in each book were the Other Races sections. That's what I would've liked more of.
