It's the little things...

My copy has smeared a bit as well. There is a white part on the magazine, err booklet, that is now completely devoid of ink. Just a white dot. I have handled it very little. Brought it out flipped through it once. Laid it on a clean table and read a little bit more from it. The magazine is in bad shape already. And I handled it very careful. Bad print product. Not the quality that I have come to expect from Wizards. Not enough art in the book. To many mistakes with the pre gens. To much money for a sub par product.

Having said that. The adventure seems pretty good. And the maps are super cool.

Some things I've been wondering... (I don't have a copy yet.)

People who have the smudging problem:

• Do you live in a warmer area? (ie whats the temp been like)
• Do you live ina more humid area?
• Do you have oilier skin?

People without smudging problems:

• Do you live in a colder climate? (ie whats the temp been like)
• Do you live ina dry climate?
• Do you have dry skin?

I live in Kansas. It was about 88 yesterday and just a bit humid. I probably do have oily skin. I'm a nerd. However having read of the smudging problems I took precautions: I washed my hands with an alcohol based disinfectant gel and dried them thoroughly before handling the magazine.

I wondered the same thing though, maybe its a climate thing. Still a 30 dollar magazine (with extras, I know) should hold up better despite the climate or nerd oil.

Shrug... I've had stuff that was GREAT quality melt on me when the conditions were right... But yeah, something about it probably makes those conditions right more often.

I'm guessing mine won't smudge, as:

I have dry skin and my house is usually pretty chilly (I live in San Francisco, and almost never turn the heat on...)

I think my only real concern will be that SF tends to be somewhat humid (what with the fog and all...)

I live in Sweden so I live with moderate temperate and humidity. As for the oily skin, we zombies are a rather dry lot.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm a little upset about the quality of KotS.

I picked it up today. The thing that I thought of was how the pages felt like a copy of Dungeon magazine, but at with a skimpy cover. I though the overall quality was higher than that of Shattered Gates of Slaughtergaurde, and the included maps are nice (even though they are reprints and the paper feels lighter than the Fantastic Locations qualilty).

I see each instance getting slightly better than the last, WoTC learns from things people don't like. For intstance, there was an adventure Gwen Kestral did that had black and white print on grey background... they won't do that again I bet.

Anyhow, looking forward to reading this.

i guess this is going to be merged into the general impressions thread...

but specifically discussing the layout and design; yes it is very nicely done.

My ink smudged despite being careful, and if i hadn't been aware of the fragility the tear I made in the "cover" would have been a lot worse than it was.

Not owning the maps allready, and having contemplating buying them, i'm super happy... but it wouldn't have been difficult to make new maps...

 

[Simplicity]

I super happy with KotS. I think it's probably one of the best adventures I've seen come out of Wizards.

The paper is overly thin though. I think people would be complaining less if they had just put a thicker cover on the internal booklets.
