I thought the Mimic would get more love.

Yeah, mimics, trappers, ropers are just fleshy traps similar to animated furniture and rugs of smothering.

There is definitely something about owlbears. I think the urge to make something that seems silly terrifying is a big draw for DM's. Also the recent miniatures are awesome.

I’ve used owlbears as random encounters many times.

They’re big, loud, and unreasonably violent. What’s not to love?

I voted for death knights because rocking out while laying out the death and destruction is reverently metal.

Mind Flayers: I blame Volo’s Guide for this choice.

I don't blame anybody, but I do credit Stranger Things.

I was going to put something else, but I ended up with the Goblin as my third choice simply because of how much I end up using them in adventures.

Might not be my favorite, but of the list, they are the ones I probably end up using the MOST.

(Otherwise would have probably been something like a Gith, Death Knight, or Mind Flayer, hadn't decided yet).

Red dragon since it is the biggest and baddest of the monster dragons you may fight. Nothing says "We made it." like killing a red dragon.

Owlbear since I cannot remember a campaign where the PCs did not fight one at low levels. They are also cooler than the other piecemail monsters like Jackalope or Flailsnail.

Sigh, mind flashers and beholders. Two monsters way overdone but also hardly ever actually used? Can that be possible? Apparently. Great marketing campaign, poor sales figures. (Meaning, you see them plastered all over the place, but how many DMs have used any of them in actual encounters compared to others on the list)

One does not simply use Beholders and Mind Flayers, they are the foundation of an awesome campaign. Just kidding, you can use them however you like. I do like them as BBEG, not random encounters, like an owlbear, or goblins, for example.
