I've just seen a fantastic D&D movie...

And its name was Beowulf :)

It was a good fantasy movie, but it wasn't D&D-like to me.

Lone heroes taking on horrific monsters!

Lone heroes do not take on monsters in D&D, a party of 4-6 usually does.

Dark caverns full of treasure!

They failed to take the treasure, except for a single cursed item given to them. That's very un-D&D-like. A D&D adventuring party would have killed the inhabitants and looted the treasure, and turned the cave into their new home base.

What Ogre?

Seductresses!

Not a particularly D&Dish thing really. D&D has a few, but generally the goal is to kill them, and if they do charm the party, the charm doesn't last long.

Giant fire breathing dragons!

That I will give you, except for the whole "Dragons are vulnerable only in one spot" thing.

Sadly, there is no D&D mechanic for a curse of the kind seen in this movie.

Vast heroism! Inordinate bragging!

That's just plain old fantasy...

A fine movie, a fine fantasy story, but not a D&D movie.

LOL. 13th Warrior ripped off Beowulf the epic poem...
Agamon, I got you an early gift - Merry Christmas, buddy! ;)

I don't want to say the movie is bad, because I don't know (haven't been able to see it yet). However, I do disagree with this combination.

A lone hero taking on horrific monsters isn't D&D. D&D is a party of adventurers taking on horrific monsters. IMO, the perfect D&D movie has a group of heroes, each with their own niche, as the heroes (Firefly/Serenity comes pretty close, for example).

I do expect to see the movie, and expect to enjoy it. I'm sure it will be able to give me ideas for D&D.

Conan the Destroyer is the D&D party movie. It even includes a dungeon with a strength check to lift a stone door! It has the requisite party who get summoned by a patron, given a quest, pick up a few other people along the way and then meet interesting people, kill them and take their stuff. It also has a marvelous twist at the end!

Another good D&D movie is The Long Ships which is a quest for a great treasure that has lots of roleplaying in it with a few good combats. :) See what a barbarian bard would be like!

A real D&D movie would have characters suddenly gone for part of the adventure and then reappearing...or suddenly walking around like zombies following the party and doing nothing. At least, that is what a movie based on our games would look like, with all the absenteeism!
