Ivy,Human Ranger,"Am I becoming evil?"

"Obad-Hai, give me the patience to endure the things I can't change, the strength to change those I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

I was traveling with part of my group from the town, including the drow necromancer Amaril, when we came upon a man who was carrying one of the enchanted jewels that Amaril is collecting. Amaril demanded the gem but the man, a thief from town, would not give it up. Amaril killed him like we would swat a fly. I did no more than warn the man that he was dealing with a very powerful magic user. Some members of my party said that I was becoming evil. I had my reasons for not interfearing. I come from a peaceful part of the land. I had little contact with powerful or evil magic users until recently. The discovery that our new friend was a disguised drow and totally evil was a shock to me. He was also more powerful than any magic user that I have ever seen. I used my success as a local defender to gain an audience with the royal wizard and told them about the drow. They sent a squad of wizards and clerics to arrest him but he escaped easily. At this point he believes that another member of the party ,who had a little accident, was the one who turned him in. No one would listen to an old woman, even one who is a great archer. Amaril said that I am not important enough to kill. It is true that nothing I could do would hurt him. Also, the jewels seem to do less harm in his hands than in others. The things are coming after him to take the jewels away are as powerful as he is and even more evil. I do not trust him but we are in a situation where the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Let them fight and we will worry about the last one standing. I was preyed on by thieves, maybe even this one, at the lowest part of my life and I almost think he deserved what he got. I wonder if I am slipping over to evil?

Guilty conscience

To prove to myself that I was not evil, I got involved in the hunt for a kidnapped girl, instead of just letting the city guard handle it. I also took a dwarf fighter aquaintance who I had never seen in combat. She turned out to be more of a hazard to her allies than to her enemies. The first hired rogue was killed when he failed to spot a trap. We managed to break in on a vampire and his cult of followers but we lost the element of surprise when the dwarf managed to miss the door when trying to chop it down. The dwarf accidentally cut the head off the second rogue. We were almost dead when Amaril managed to teleport the vampire to him. He wanted vampire blood but now got a whole live vampire. He still used wispering winds to say"YOU OWE ME!" I had to use all my cash to get him a scroll to control vampires. I was uncomfortable selling evil tainted loot from the bodies and dealing with evil wizards. When we were attacked by a party of orcs on the way home,Amaril commented that I seemed to enjoy killing them. I just like it better than them killing me. The 50gp bounty on each orc head and the armor and weapons we took from them made it a profitable encounter but I did not go hunting them. They attacked us.

Ivy isn't evil, at least not yet.
The neutral alignment is a nice one.
She hasn't intentionally tortured any innocents yet.

Real life has interupted our game for three weeks, so Ivy is getting a good nights sleep in the tavern and Amaril is hunting a demom in the Dark Forest.

She deserves the rest.

No, Ivy is following a sensible path but needs to be careful about slipping too far into moral relativism. She must be prepared to deal with Amaril, or the things which defeat him, in due course. Arrows of Necromancer Slaying should be on her shopping list.

Amaril and Heindall the barbarian easily killed the demon and came back to town. The miasma of evil clinging to them made it hard to stay near them. The contrast with the nice young paladin of St. Cuthbert who rode into town this morning made them seem even worse. He felt it too but said it was not honorable to kill them until he saw them do something evil. They decided to try Scruud and most patrons wisely left the room when the bottle was brought out. They spilled it and passed out. We dragged them out before they were killed by the fumes( the tavern will be closed at least a week while the spill is neutralized). It would have been so easy to leave them or to kill them while they were helpless but not honorable. We saw signs of a battle outside town and rode out to investigate. An army of humans and dwarves fought an army of orcs and goblins. There were two demon in the sky, watching. Suddenly they threw lightning and killed almost everyone on both sides. Amaril and Heindall fought the demons. The paladin speared one demon on his lance and I got in a few shots at the other. The ground was too wet with blood for good footing. We tried to find and help the survivors. One was attacked by one of Amaril's nightmares just as the paladin finished healing him. The paladin wounded the nightmare and drove it off but the soldier was dying again. A fireball flew from the sky, from Amaril's direction. The paladin decided to take the soldier to a cleric who could resurrect him. Right after that Amaril dissapeared. Later only Amaril came back to town. Even though he was the only one who wanted to loot the bodies on the battlefield, he has a bit more gold than he should. A special caravan, made up mostly of elves, has arrived in town. It includes many nobles and high ranking wizards. They are going to speak to the Knigh about how to deal with the cursed jewels and the monsters. I will join them and sever all ties with Amaril. Elves respect women. They will listen to my story.

The benefits of being a Neutral-Evil Barbarian worshiping Erythnul

I, being Heimdall, am evil for the sake of evil and kill things in boundless slaughter because it is my way of life. However, I won't kill anything that's weak because there's nothing to prove in it. ~.^

Slaying demons is fun, and Heimdall likes Ivy just fine as a person.

O'course, like I said, you haven't really ventured down the evil path, you're just kind of risking inadvertantly wandering down the path (or at least towards it) by inaction.

Honestly, it's pretty hard to change from a Neutral alignemnt unless you start typically taking actions going towards one way. Any sort of good act that gets down steers Ivy towards the Neutral Good path, and if you asked me, the inaction and allowing evil to continue right in front of you steers you back from the NG path and more towards the NE path. So, in the end, they balance each other out and you remain on the straight and narrow Neutral road.

~.^ Always willing to back ya up.

Also, don't confuse honor/attachments with a good alignment. Even Evil characters and creatures can have friends, even of differing alignments. :)

For my two cents I say that if you are nuetral you have nothing wrong. If you are good, you are walking a fine line, depending on what AL you are, by not standing up to par with your convictions.

However, there are two things that should settle the matter. In the core books, page 103 PHB 3.5, it states that even a Lawful good character can be greedy and steal. Every character has his bad days, you are in the clear as long as you strive to be follow your AL most of the time.

The most important aspect of AL is, what does your DM say? He ultimately has the final say.

Not you too!

When we got back to town from helping Heimdall find the lost members of his tribe, there was a warband in town. They were searching for Amaril. Scrying wizards had seen him raising undead and killing the yound paladin. There is a large price on his head. Amaril promptly teleported out of town. I joined the warband when they tried to trail him by magic. He escaped over the border and helped a red dragon cross the border to our side. An archmange killed the red dragon before he was a threat to us. It is interesting that the first thing the paladin leader of the warband did when he met Heimdall was offer to help him to atone. Heimdall was insulted that I chose to continue to travel with the warband instead of with him. He had his followers try to imprison me in his hall. Six big strong men to hold one little old lady who isn't even that good with a sword. Cowards. I got out because my dwarf friend was finally sober enough to open a door. I was just in time to see Heimdall challenge the paladin to a duel and kill him. With all the monsters to fight, it is a waste to kill a fighter over an imaginary slight. Without their leader, the warband is falling apart.
The elven caravan has been delayed and I intend to leave with it. I thought I wanted to settle down but I think I prefer being a moving target.I have had enough of being confined in buildings. I will try to talk the remaining members of the warband into traveling with me.

Today the town was attacked by goblins who were kidnapping women alive. While I was fighting them I saw M'yarn the tellasyn stab one of the unconsious women instead of attacking the goblins. He said he was saving her from a fate worse than death. I warned the prince about him. Since the elven caravan is not leaving town, I am going to join the warband in their hunt for another demon. It seems safer than staying in this town.
