The 20th level Bard ability, Superior Inspiration isn't very good. Let's add another one to it. How about this?

Starting at 20th level, you can add half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any saving throw you make that doesn’t already include your proficiency bonus.

It's a little self-centred for a Bard ability. It's also strictly inferior to the ability Monks pick up at 14th level.

Perhaps, but that's why I was saying "in addition to", because they could get Superior Inspiration and this.

Seems fine to me. The bard capstone ability is pretty underwhelming, and this fits with the inherent flexibility of the class.

In an effort to reduce comparisons between this and the monk, what if this ability let the bard add +4 to any d20 check that doesn't otherwise have their proficiency bonus applied?

You don't have to include the rounded down part, since all characters prof bonus at level 20 is +6. No way to have a number that is otherwise.
