James Cameron directing Battle Angel movie

I view this with the same mixed excitement and horror that any fan of something has when hearing it's going to be turned into a movie.

What really makes me cringe is the "photorealistically". I have images of "actors" that look like action figures, like in the Matrix Reloaded "Burly Brawl".

But if they do it right...

Cameron's talked about doing Battle Angel for years, so I suspect Jim probably has a pretty good script worked out for it. It sounds rather ambitious technologicaly, heres to Cameron pulling it off.

I hope this is true to the source manga. I haven't read Battle Angel myself, but I saw the anime based on it (Gunnm), and it was great...though, amusingly enough, when it was over at GenCon, one of the Hades Pro guys, after watching it with us, commented into the mike "Well, that was depressing as hell" and he was right. Luckily, he then put on some Nuku Nuku, so it was all okay.

And the point of this story is...I like stories. :o

The manga (all 8? 9? graphic novels - can't remember, but it's all on my shelf at home) is freakin' awesome.

It'll be too long to do the whole thing in movie format, so it'll either be incredibly compressed (unlikely), or just cover the 1st and/or 2nd graphic novels (which is what the anime covered).

Even tackling such a project gets a thumbs-up from me.

I think he's been talking about it since the early 90s. I remember it being mentioned repeatedly in the "in development" section of Comic Scene magazine (and that's been cancelled since the mid-90s).

Of course, wanting to do it for years doesn't necessarily mean that the script will be very good. Don't forget how long Lucas had to work on the Star Wars prequels and the best he could do was Jar Jar Binks.

Cameron and Lucas are fairly different beasts altogether. The worst story Cameron ever came up with is Titanic, which gives me faith he will do a good adaptation here.
