The Ten-Minute Background

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!

1) He is very much an artist. He sees art as the transformation of something of little value into something more. This value may be situational. He loves changing things, either physically or visually, to suit the current needs. This is what gravitates him to the schools of Transmutation and Illusion.

2) His family is comprised mostly of craftsmen. Carpenters, stonemasons, metalworkers, and a few artists. They have quite a few master craftsmen who are highly sought after for their skills and have contracts with the royal family for a number of projects varying in type and scope.

3) Theric did not take to the family trade. He dabbled in a great deal of it and easily excelled, but he didn't stick to any one thing. The only thing he could focus on was magic. Of all the tools he had used, magic was the most versatile and the most powerful.

4) Theric is very enthusiastic, energetic, and very curious. This can often get him in trouble, but he is smart enough that the problem is rarely major.

5) Theric doesn't have many friends. He is mentally beyond most people so they can find it hard to relate to him. His intellect and enthusiasm can also be intimidating to a lot of people as well. Given this fact, he does have many admirers, just not many people that are close to him.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

1) Theric wants to be in a position to make a difference. Power to make the world a better place. In magic, knowledge is power. The more power he has, the more impact he can have on the world. This power may be used to help make good things happen or to stop bad things from happening. Either way, he wants to have the ability to affect those things.

2) I would like to have him reconcile with his brother. They still love each other, but the resentment from Duncan's side has created a rift between them. This may require them working together to help the family.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!

1) While in the Academy of the Magical Arts, one of his experiments went awry. He covered up the mistake as best he could but another student got blamed and was kicked out. Theric has felt a lot of guilt about this and it has led him to own up to his mistakes after that.

2) Therin doesn't know it, but his family went in to great debt with the wrong people in order to get him this oppotunity. They were able to handle it in the beginning, but now they are closer and closer to going under, even though they hide this fact very well. This plays a part in his older brother's resentment of him.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

1) He is not the oldest son in his family. Theric's brother, Duncan Kort, is jealous of his younger brother. There is about 3 years between them. Duncan sees Theric as 'The Perfect One' that everyone gives a pass to because of what he can do. He's the star of the family even though he hasn't taken up the family trade. Duncan, however, is a master craftsman of the family. One of the best currently in the family.

2) Theric has a cousin in the city itself. Kerrin is one of the lead craftsmen in the contract for decorative pieces in some fo the official buildings. She works primarily in metal shaping and engraving but she oversees the woodworkers and other artists as well. She is about 10 years older than he is and used to watch after him sometimes while he was a child. This was a long time ago and they both have grown a great deal since then.

3) Theric and Duncan's father, Henri, is very proud of his son, if a little unsure how to handle him. Not sure what to do with Theric's brilliance, he always felt it best to give free reign in his studies and experiments. When something went wrong he helped clean up the mess but made sure that Theric learned from his mistakes. Henri knew that Theric was destined for great things and did whatever he could to open up new opportunities for him.

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

1) Theric remembers the first time he saw real magic. It was a storyteller that used illusions to illustrate his stories as he told them. When he introduced the villain of the story he used the magic to momentarily change his own face into that of a monster's to suddenly scare the listeners. It sent a thrill through Theric's body. He knew then that he wanted to be able to do the same things. That was when he became enamored with magic.

2) Theric feels that rules are important so he generally follows them. Rules, however, are guidelines for people who can't always be trusted to do the right thing. Thus rules can be broken for the right reasons.

3) Theric always carries around paper and charcoal readily available to write on. When he gets a stray idea or comes across information, he writes it down for later reference.

[SBLOCK="Item Letter"]It is exactly 15 days to the hour when a new herald appears at your family manor to delivery a letter addressed to you and embossed with the royal crest. Senior members in your family are quite distressed that the herald inisists upon delivering it directly into your hands and will not simply surrender it to their care.

Summoning you, the Herald does indeed surrender the letter to you but only after having you sign several documents acknowgling receipt of said letter, unopened etc etc.

Breaking the seal and reading the letter find the following:

15 Day of April
Royal Court

Dear Sir,

You are herewith commanded to bring to the opening vesture one item that best describes you, your fitness for service and your home. Should said item require payment then please present the enclosed warrant to the merchant as the form of payment.
The choice of the item, and the nature of this letter shall not be discussed by you on pain of death with anyone without royal consent. Should you have any questions then you may write them on the bottom of this letter and I will address them as best I may.

Your Obident Servant.
George Balon
Master of the HouseHold
Chief Steward [/SBLOCK]
Theric considered the odd request. It was a very abstract notion that they wanted expressed by a single object. What could he possibly use? It must describe him, his fitness for service, and his home. Well we are all craftsmen, so something to do with the trade. A statue of the King? No, too ostentatious. A table? It's something that people gather around and gives support when needed. No, still not right. How about tool? A hammer maybe? No, too blunt. A chisel? Perfect! It's a tool used in many forms of craftsmanship. It's used with wood, stone, and even metal. It's used in the creation of wonderful things by removing unwanted material. Just like creating a better world requires the removal of problems and dangers. It can be used in rough work as well as fine detail. That's it then, a chisel.

Theric commissions the creation of a high quality chisel, made from ironwood and strong steel.

[SBLOCK="Dishes"]Much to the annoyance of your family another messenger arrives on the 7th day prior to the intake. Opening it you find the following :

Dear Candidate,

Your are herewith commanded to oversee the preparation and delivery of six of your regional dishes / beverages. Each dish / beverage must be in sufficent quantity to serve 1000 guests . Delivery will need to occur within 48 hours of receipt of this letter . Enclosed you will find two warrants to cover the purchase of said stores and one authorizing shipment via royal portal.

Respectfully ,
Abigail Silverspoon
Mistress of the Kitchens[/SBLOCK]
Theric seeks out a few sources to learn about the local culinary arts. Restaurants, family members, and his own experiences.

1) Not being big into alcohol, he skips that topic. Instead he decides to focus on a cider made locally. The order is normally more than the local maker has available at one time, but he is more than happy to ramp up production a little bit for the extra income it would mean.

2) Next will be a soup which will be a thin chili with pasta in it. Unusual in many areas. It will feature local wild game as the meat rather than the traditional meat. It gives it a more nutty flavor that is surprisingly complimentary to the herbs used in the seasoning.

3) For an appetizer he has chosen finger sandwiches. Mutton, lettuce, and tomato where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe.

4) Next would be a salad. It includes some grilled and seasoned chicken along with the some of the standard vegetables. It also includes local roots for flavor and some dried fruits as garnish with a vinaigrette dressing.

5) The main course would be what's locally called the "Three Birds" meal. You take a small bird like a chicken or a game hen and put it inside a larger bird such as a duck, and place all that inside a turkey. Each bird is seasoned a little bit differently to give it a layered flavor effect. It's popular around the upcoming holidays.

6) Dessert would be a lemon cheesecake with whipped cream on top and a raspberry sauce topping.

OOC: I'm not a foodie so I'm not sure about all this.

[SBLOCK="Warrants Letter"]20th Day of April
Ministry of Justice

Dear Candidate,

Our most gracious soverign has herewith granted to you the following warrants. You may only use one and each must follow the provisions.

Respectfully,

Colin Shieldarm
Lord High Justice

First Warrant - A warrant for the immediate release of any imprisoned or wrongfully detained individual.
Second Warrant - A warrant for the immediate arrest and incarartion for a period up to 15 years trial of any person or persons within a 200 mile radius of your home. Said warrant may only be countermanded by the Lord High Justice or His Majesty the King.[/SBLOCK]
Theric investigates to find an individual that feels he is above the law. A troublemaker that continually slips through the cracks due to technicalities and corruption. Someone cruel that has little respect for life. This person would be well known as a criminal, but the law just can't make it stick.

[Sblock="1,000 gp"]
20th Day of April
Ministry of Finance

Dear Candidate,

As a Candiate member for his most Gracious Majesty Household you are herewith granted the monthly income of 50 gold pieces for the period of your Candaicay (one year). Further as a one time boon, his majesty has granted you an immediate stipend of 1000 gold pieces so that you may enjoy the intake. As per protocol during your candidate year you are obliged not to draw upon any additional funds that may be accessable to you. Said stipend must be accounted for to our office no later than the 5th day after the intake and all remaining funds returned to the royal treasury.

Respectfully,

William Kane
Minister of Finance

(enclosed is the actual cash sum or 1000 coins in a small purse)[/Sblock]
First of all, Theric rejects the extra 500gp from his family. He assures them that he is shrewd enough to make what he has last with no problems. He also wants to try and lessen the strain on his family's resources. He uses part of the 1000gp to put together a departing dinner for his family on the night before he leaves to go to the capital. Not lavish, but a step up from their usual fare.

He spends money on buying different types of alcoholic beverages in bottles. Gifts for people at the capital, to be given when a guest at someone's home, special occasions, or other such instances. Wine for a dinner invitation, scotch for a business meeting, etc.

Given that he can't use any source of income besides the 50gp a month for the next year, Theric decides to plan ahead for the coming year. He rents a workspace for the year and equips it with all of the tools he will need for several different types of projects. (Metalwork, carpentry, painting, sculpture, etc.) He also stocks it with meterials to work with. He may use some of the wood to create furniture for himself if needed. The centerpiece of his equipment there would be the "Traveler's Any-Tool".

Once he is in the city, he will seek out knowledge. He will find maps of the city and the surrounding areas as well as a map of the country. He will also track down some books about the same as well as other interesting topics such as magic, history, art, etc.

OOC: The "Traveler's Any-Tool"is from Ultimate Equipment: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/wondrous-items/r-z/traveler-s-any-tool/

Theric does indeed have some one in mind. There is an extremley wealth countness who abuses her staff and has on more than one occasion escaped justice as no one will prosecute her for her treatment of her serfs and freeman. Anyone who does dare challenge her seems to disappear or have a fatal accident and in fact over the last 10 years 100 or so young men and women have gone missing totally

Hmmm. Sounds like something that might collapse the moment she left. Is there anyone good that can take over and fill her place?
