Count me in the "I think he knows" camp. If Joe is not in on the gag then the producers managed to find the absolute perfect guy for this show.
If he is a law school dropout then he has a college degree. He likely could do a little better than delivering pizza.
He has a comment for everything, and is always active. On other reality shows, there are times when a contestant sits on the sidelines, not getting involved in a particular situation. Of course, this could be due to editing, as there may be story hooks to which he fails to react, so they just leave these out.
Early on I read a review where the possibility that Joe is in on it was suggested. The reviewer noted that these types of shows are fun for the viewer when we are "in" on the secret, but it might not turn out as well when we find out that we have been played too.
I will keep watching. The episodes are rerun frequently, so even if you miss it the first time you can catch it later in the week.
