Joining a new group.

I ended up meeting up with one guy last night for awhile at a local shop that I had no idea existed. It went really, really well. He seems fairly normal, for the most part and we ended up sitting down playing a game of Warhammer Quest with some other guys around, which was pretty damn fun.

He plays in a weekly Shadowrun group, which I'd love to actually get a chance to play, but it's pretty full at the moment but it's looking like one of their new guys won't work out at all so he's pretty certain a spot will open here real soon. So we got to chatting about that, chatting about Pathfinder and 4e some and eventually he said pretty soon we'll get together and he'll bring his Shadowrun stuff and we'll go over character creation and the basic rules so if that spot does open up, I can slide in fairly easily.

So I feel pretty confident about that and I am hoping that spot does open up. Don't know who the DM is yet or anything so I can't really bother him just yet about getting in the game smoothly :)

Sounds good modernist hopefully you can get in on that group and - depending on how much free time you have - maybe try to get in on another group or two? I'd keep my eyes open at the local shop you were at and check out online if you are interested.

I don't think it's any different than any other foray into a new social gathering. Making a good first impression will do wonders for you. The last time I joined a new group, I asked the DM what kind of pizza everyone liked; I brought 3 large pizzas, Mountain Dew, and a big bag of ginger snaps*. The group was pleased as punch, and though we could not be more different in personality and play-style (and even lifestyle), they took an instant liking to me and my characters.

*Though I didn't keep bringing pizzas, I did keep bringing ginger snaps, since on the first night they thought it was delightfully odd that I would bring such a thing. The ritual at the beginning of each session was the unveiling of the ginger snaps, and the group's reply, "In honor of the movie."
