Jovian Chronicles (DP9) - any good?

If you have the starterpack, maybe you can clear up some confusion: the DP9 store lists the players handbook as a hardcover product, except for the starterpack, where it is called a softcover. Is there a special softcover edition only for the starter pack, or is this an error?

Can't really comment, back when I ordered the starter pack it was a different set. I got, um... The main rulebook, the companion, the space equipment guide, the Chaos Principle campaign, and the DM shield. I think I mighta got something else, but I cant remember.

Also payed a bit more, as I recall. More on the order of 100 US.

The first edition of JC was a softcover book which contained both background material on the setting and the Silhouette rules. There was also a companion rule book with advanced rules material (addictions, radiation rules, etc.)

With the new edition, the core Silhouette rules are *only* covered in the Silhouette Core book, and there's a new hardcover JC book which contains more background material and a few special sets of rules unique to the setting. I believe that all of the rules covered in the old rulebook and companion are covered in the new silhouette core and jovian chronicles.

I haven't seen a softcover version of the new edition JC book, so I suspect that "Jovian Chronicles RPG Second Edition Player's Handbook (DP9-920, Softcover, 256 pages, Silcore/OGL Compatible)" is just a typo, possibly made when modifying the description to the new 2nd edition books from the old 1st edition books.

I just got the starter pack yesterday (very fast delivery, excellent service) and can confirm that it's a typo. The package contained the hardcover SilCORE rules, the hardcover 2nd ed Jovian Chronicles player guide, and the softcover mechanical catalog.

Looks like a great game, though I mostly got the pack so I could get the latest SilCORE rules for use with Tribe 8 (a truly wonderful game from the same company).I intend to combine Jovian Chronicles with Trinity myself, I love Trinity but the storyteller rules suck and there's a lot of nice material in JC I can port over :).

I played Jovian Chronicles back when it was a second-party suppliment for Mekton Zeta. I loved the setting, and I love it even more now that DP9 has some money to spend in putting out the sourcebooks. I just wish they weren't so expensive.

I can't say much about the Silhouette system, though. I haven't had a chance to play a game using that system.

Before d20 came along, Silhouette was my absolute favorite system. Even though d20 has replaced it as my most comfortable system, I still think that the Silhouette system is one of the better ones on the market. It's extremely complete feeling. Additionally, the settings that DP9 puts out are very very good. JC was the first one I got, actually. I haven't had the chance to pick up SilCORE yet, but I'd like to once I can afford to.
