joys of coffee

Ok, so I think I might have suddenly become a coffee drinker. Stayed at a hotel for 3 days and over those three days had 3 cups of coffee. I discovered I'm a cream and at least one sugar guy. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a coffee machine. Anyone have any recommendations for features I should keep my eyes open for? Anyone have a favorite kind/brand of coffee?

Caffinated!

I love coffee. I am not big in to expensive coffee though, so I go with classic folders and hazelnut creme. My husband does not like coffee that much so we have a small 4 cup coffee maker. The single serve one's are really neat. its already on my wish list for santa next year!

Another one falls...

I am planning on having a bumper sticker made along the lines of ones I have seen for expensive colleges; "My wife and my money go to Starbucks"

My wife's preference is for Starbucks coffees that are categorized as "smooth." We have a good ol' Mr. Coffee we received as a wedding gift 11+ years ago. Add a tiny dash of salt to the ground coffee before brewing - seems to reduce the bitterness.

you can add semi sweet chocolate or cinnamon to the grounds too.

a timer and auto shut off are a must too.

See, I'm not a coffee person. I'm a sugar person who thinks coffee adds a nice bit of flavor. I'll take a cup of coffee with five or six sugar cubes and a nice dose of milk or cream. Even with tea, the only tea I've ever really enjoyed without adding sugar was Japanese tea ceremony green tea from powder. Man, that was some good stuff.

I applied for a job at Starbucks, and on the application it asks what you like most about coffee. I personally love the scent. Mmm. Good.

It depends. :) We use a french press and we grind our beans, but we like strong coffee. We buy from a locally-owned shop that buys and roasts their own - I can't recommend that enough, because not only do these guys know their coffee, but they really give back to the neighborhood.

If you don't want to do that much work or like your coffee that strong, I'd suggest the Papa Nicholas or Eight o'Clock brands. If they are available in your area, they can be found at a grocery store and are much cheaper and better tasting than Starbuck's coffee (Don't get me wrong, I used to love Starbuck's until I tasted Metropolis's coffee.).

As for coffee makers, I'd suggest getting a Krups coffeemaker - they have several models, including one that has a small carafe for only a couple of cups (if you're the only one drinking it, it might be a good bet) and one that has a thermal carafe. They can be inexpensive and our last machine was a Krups. My boyfriend probably had it for 12 years.

Also, in case you're curious, Metropolis Coffee has a web site and you can order beans online:

Mmmm, coffee.

You can get a Mr. Coffee or the like for less than $30; it'll come with a timer and the ability to keep the pot warm for 3 to 5 hours. I'm a big fan of the local supermarket Colombian coffee, but poke around a little until you run across something you like.

I'm picturing you caffeinated - yeep!

Now, see, I'm not a caffeine fiend (yet). I don't usually drink caffeinated sodas (I don't avoid them but I don't seek them out either). I have a feeling I might be a one or at most two cup a day type of guy. :)

If you are going to buy a coffee maker I'd sugest one with a carafe(sp?) instead of a pot/warmer combo. It keeps the coffee fresher tasting if you don't drink it that fast.
