joys of coffee

Eric,

If you are looking at 1-2 cups a day, I would suggest you get a french press and a bean grinder and forget about a drip coffee maker. Then you can buy whole beans (which keep fresh much longer than ground coffee) and just grind enough each time you want a cup.

A small Braun coffee grinder should go for $20 or less (mne has lasted for years).

As for coffee, that is all personal taste. I hate Starbucks coffee, as I find it to be overbrewed and bitter. If you want to splurge on some great coffee, buy some 100% pure Kona coffee...very expensive but very nice.

If you keep up your habit, you will find that the amount of sugar and cream will decrease over time, and you will be addicted to the coffee flavour alone!

We have a Starbucks Barista espresso machine. Espresso is really how I like my coffee, and straight up is how I like to drink it.

Black and bitter as my heart, as the saying goes. ;)

I'm a fan of Starbucks Espresso roast, but the stuff we make at home is better -- the new Starbucks machines don't really allow for LONG espresso, which is where the REAL money is, in my opinion. Too bitter? What? Yum....

Favorite brand? For me, I hate to say it, but it's usually true. The more expensive coffees are often the best but your taste may vary. If you don't like hazzlenut, Startbucks or Dunking Donuts probably won't have a hazzlenut you'll like.

I tend to enjoy Eight O'clock coffee and Stewards as two of my favorites.

Add my voice to the French press throng, especially if you're not going to drink more than one or two cups at a time. I like some Starbucks - the Yukon is my favorite at the moment. I'd suggest getting a small 2 cup press (they come in lots of sizes) and grinder then experimenting. You can go to a coffee shop or any decent supermarket and get whole beans by the ounce. Get a couple of ounces of different kinds of beans and see what you like.

My wife and I collected 8 of the little 2 cup presses and bring them out for dinner parties. Everyone gets their own little press with whatever flavor/caf/decaf they like. They make tea, too!
