Judges Guild and the Wilderlands

I believe you are in North America. (If not, humour me for a second) Do you eat food grown there? All the land is effectively stolen. All the food grown is thus tainted.

The food, the site where I live, everything, yeah.

But, then, really, I'm totally screwed in that regard - I was born here, so I have no real claim on a place in any culture other than this one, and this one is ethically flawed at its foundation. So, I really have two choices - one is to simply end my life as impossible to live ethically, or I must come to some accommodation between my current existence, and the history on which that existence is based. Obviously, I've chosen the latter.

The same thing holds for every ethical question over time - you have a choice to completely eschew, or come to some accomodation with the past.

You discount emigration to a more ethically supportable culture then? There are always choices.

My point is there should be and always has been points where the chain is disregarded. Either because of convenience or because literally no one considers it any more.

If party A acquires the IP from party B then unless the IP is itself is tainted/undesirable, party A shouldn't be beholden to party B's sins. And if you want to consider party A to have sinned by buying from somone tainted... what did you eat this morning? What are you wearing? What tech do you use? What company paid your salary? Taint is everywhere.

He is fully agreeing with you.

He is fully agreeing with you.

He is partially agreeing with me. He gave the choice of suicide or live with it. There are other choices including abandon it and move somewhere more ethically acceptable. Another is to accept it because taint is everywhere and is inescapable.

OK.

As a note, GG are done with JG once they have completed the obligations of their current KS. And none of the taht current KS/item royalties will go to JG.

I hope that the B2 and 3 just give away the IP as it is now worthless, maybe giving it to somone like JG or FGG in return for completing their previous failed CSIO kickstarter.

Yes, I do, for two reasons...

If my parent's immigration as children, fleeing from Soviets who wanted to put my grandfathers into gulags, is not considered ethical... then I take it that there is no such thing as ethical emigration. I am taking space, and moving my own self and culture, into the space of some current inhabitants who did not ask me to be there.

And, in fact, while you bring up the issues of North American, the fact of the matter is that this has happened to every single culture on Earth. At this point, there is no place where some original inhabitants were not imposed upon by groups of immigrants. Everywhere in Africa, Europe, and Asia, Modern Humans displaced previous hominids, and drove them to extinction, and then various groups of modern humans have been stomping on each other ever since. In North America, Australia, and Pacific Islands, Europeans displaced indigenous peoples. There was always someone there before you who was treated very poorly. All land in the world has been stolen from someone before.

My point is there should be and always has been points where the chain is disregarded.

Yep. Or, if not disregarded, at least accepted that the sins of the parents don't fully fall on the children, whether that's in a true familial sense, or in a handing down of corporate assets sense.

It's not worthless. Somebody will always pay for it. There's no incentive to just give it away.

That is true, though I can understand that for some people it doesn't. The case could be argued as well that Lovecraft's creations are out in the world now, and plenty of other authors have worked to tackle and redress his bigotry.

Personally, I no longer feel comfortable with anything Lovecraftian that doesn't address his racism.

Anyway, I suspect that after Goodman Games gets this Judges Guild product out, that's it for JG releases. It's not like the CSIO Kickstarter wasn't already a debacle before this. Bledsaw II's Judges Guild isn't able to put a product out on their own and I can't imagine anyone would be willing to work with them going forward.

I think in most folks mind, the fact that Lovecraft is dead and his IP is (arguably) in the Public Domain makes a big difference here. He, and his estate, get no support from use of the IP.

I think there are so many people who have made stuff in the Cthulhu mythos that it's not really Lovecraft's any more. There are plenty of awesome creators who can inspire your Cthulhu works without ever reading a word of Lovecraft. It's public domain not just in a legal sense, but in a very real sense, I think, these days, like Robin Hood or Geek myths.
