I'm hoping for modrons.

And giant space hamsters, and the bonnacon.

As far as I'm concerned, you can never have too many monsters.

I'm hoping for modrons as well. I really liked those guys.

Count your blessings. At least they're books. They could be one giant three-ring binder with packs of monster pages coming out periodically. *shudders at the memory*
Oh yuck. Did you have to mention the MCs? :\

Mmh. The binder does take up far less shelf space than five hardcover monster books, though. The pages could've been more durable, though.

Well, it's not like monster books are splatbooks you have to buy "to keep up" with your (fellow) players/DM (it's an argument I don't buy in anyway). I say, wait and see.

I'm hoping these two separate books are what should have been done with MMIV - one book of just monsters and another of encounters.
But WotC is so random anymore I don't know what to expect.

It was one of those ideas that was great in theory but just didn't work in practice.

To actually make them work they would have had to have printed the sheets on something basically indestructible (maybe plastic, like Australian banknotes). I imagine that would have been rather expensive (especially since the MCs as they were weren't actually cheap).

They would also have had to keep to one monster to a page. It was incredibly annoying not to be able to put the sheets in alphabetical order because you needed to slot something in between two sides of the same page.

glass.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why they keep creating new monsters when lots of classic monsters I would love to pay money to have updated sit there untouched.

heck yeah. i might actually consider getting this one if at least say 1/4 of the monsters were conversions... that was one of the major turnoffs for me on MM4, and the almost-no conversion representation in MM3 has made me really slow in getting that as well.

How many Monster Manuals are there going to be?
For comparison, AD&D 2nd Edition had 26 monster "books" (14 three-hole punched sets, 11 softcover books and 1 electronic publication) plus two compilations with reprinted monsters (Monstrous Manual and Ravenloft Monstrous Compendium Appendices I & II).

I think the 3.X Monster Manual series probably still has some momentum... ;)

Wizards will publish anything. It's incredible. Complete Mage when we already have Complete Arcane? Dragon Magic when we already have a Draconomicon? The Book of Nine Swords is another waste of trees. And the MM4? Do we really need those spawn of Tiamat? Wizards gotta get their paper, I suppose. :\
