July - What are you listening to? (Books AND music)

Well I've just discovered Tool. I was listening to them last night when my son comes in and asks me to turn the music down

I don't listen to too many books on tape though I have thought of getting some poetry anthologies that way -- poems are usually better heard than read.

Of late, I have been on a retro-80s kick, back to my youth -- a lot of Kate Bush, Bauhaus, X, Peter Gabriel, the Go-Go's, and even a quick dip into Dead Or Alive... ;)

All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris

Tried out the new(?) Playaway format my library has introduced and it has worked well.

Currently listening to Patrick O'Brian's Mauritius Command, book #4 of the Aubrey/Maturin Master and Commander Series.

100% awesome. I'm utterly delighted with this series of audio books and could not recommend them more highly (albeit the English 18th century romance that rears its head a wee too often in Book #2 I could have done with a wee less of).

But this is still one of the most amazing historical romps I've ever had the privilege to take. Can't believe I missed this series for so long.

I can recomend 3 amazing records:

Dominici - O3 - A trilogy, part 2

The former singer of Dream Theater shocks us with a superb album, this is a contender for the best progressive metal album of the year, without a doubt. Great voice, excellent songs.
Sounds like Dream Theater, but with more melody.

Anubis Gate - Andromeda Unchained

A stunning album with lots of new, fresh ideas. Very heavy, still quite progressive with an amazing singer. Sounds like a young Geoff Tate. Musically - well, you just got to listen :)

Circus Maximus - Isolate

Another blistering album from the norwegians! Their mix of Dream Theater and Symphony X works amazingly well, and a very solid production paired with the clean vocals of Michael Eriksen makes this record a must have.

I listen to two kinds of music. Or rather I listen to one kind of music and I "use" the other. First of all there's good music I enjoy for it's own sake, like classical music or some singer/songwriters.

Then we have music that's not so enjoyable per se but is excellent for programming/work, like a tool. I especially like aggresive electronic/industrial music. Caffeine for the ears, and brain! :)

So, this month I'm lis... using: Xotox, Feindflug, KiEw, Soman, Grendel and Amduscia. Very angry, very uplifting.

And listening to: Bach, Leonard Cohen, Genesis etc.
