jump and attack

Hi

one of my player asked me this last session: '' can I jump and attack the target at de same time? If I do, do I do more damage?''

I can't find anything related to this. He can make an athletic roll for horizontal jump. But do I give more damage for the momentum the PC get from jumping and attacking? The PC is a warforged barbarian, that is why I'm asking. If he was an elven cleric, I would of said no.

Yes (with some restrictions).

Jumping is movement.

He can jump (move action) and attack (standard action),

OR

He can charge (standard action) using a jump as part of his move (subject to the 'move directly towards target' restriction).

As a charge, he has a +1 to his attack but no bonus to damage.

If he were jumping down upon his enemy - as from a ledge, I might be tempted to change this from an attack bonus to a damage bonus, but that would be purely a house rule.

Generally, no.

But if you think the idea is cool enough to warrant some kind of bonus, have him make an Athletics check vs. the target's AC +2 (or Str vs. AC). If he fails, he falls Prone at the target's feet (as the target knocks him down). If he succeeds, give him an extra 1d6 damage to his Charge attack. Up that damage as he levels, maybe +1d6 per tier.

If he's using a power, he doesn't get the bonus because powers are set maneuvers already - they don't include jumping charges unless they say they do. So basically it only works with a Charge.

Yes you can jump and attack, either as part of a move before the attack, or a charge.

No it shouldn't get a damage bonus (because then they will just do it all the time) unless...

a) It's a one off circumstance, such as they are jumping down from a ledge, in which case check page 42 of the DMG and perhaps use the Limited Damage Expression as a guide to the damage. Or let a basic attack do +1[W] damage. Using the terrain to your advantage should be reward IMHO, and since as DM you control the terrain, you can stop this being exploited all the time.

b) Come up with an Encounter or Daily Power and decide on a level for it and let the player swap it for an existing one.

Good idea

I think I would give him the 1d6 more damage but he need to succes like 3 roll.
1st: The athletic check for horizontal jump
2nd: The normal attack roll
3rd: The athletic check against the AC + 2
For the 3rd roll, I wonder if it wouldn't be better to use something against reflex. With those 3 checks, I think its a fair trade with the falling prone if miss the 3rd roll and if he miss his first athletic check to jump, well too bad, you missed your shot.

I'm in agreement with everyone else who has said this is a fancy charge.

If he was doing something crazy like diving off a balcony, I might treat it like an attack using the Power Attack feat. Or I might just give him some bonus damage. Depends on what you want to encourage in your players.

Cheers,
Roger

The reason I put the "gamble" in the first roll is because you're risking bonus damage against a chance of granting CA and having a -2 to your attack. If you put the bonus damage after the attack roll, failure isn't as bad.

It also forces the player to make a choice if he fails that first roll - stand up from prone and don't attack, or make the attack and lie on the ground?

I think it makes the most sense to treat it like a charge.

You could also treat it like an Acrobatic stunt, however, as discussed in the DMG. There is a damage by level table that might be appropriate for something creative, say, jumping with a particularly heavy object in your arms to land on an enemy from a balcony or something.
