[June] What are you reading?

I finished War in Tethyr a couple of days ago (pretty good, but I figured out alot of the end) and then picked up The Doom Brigade set in DL. I really enjoyed it, especially the funny bits. Now I'm reading the sequel, Draconian Measures, & I hope it's just as good.

...so I read Brust's Issola {is that the last Taltos novel. I'm so out-of-the-loop with them...}

Issola is the latest Taltos novel, but there is a new book in the phoenix guards books. The Phoenix Guards, 500 Years After, and now The Paths of The Dead. This book starts the viscount of Adrilahnka trilogy which is part of the other series, go figure.

What am I reading? The Compleat Dying Earth Saga by Vance, Madeline L'Engles space and time fantasies (they're supposedly kids books, but there are alot of difficult ideas for kids to get their heads around in them, and Waterdeep the last book in the Avatar series can we say cheese:D

PATHS OF THE DEAD is the first third of the final (too-big-to-be-published) book in the Romances of Khaavren trilogy. Due out in August is LORD OF CASTLE BLACK, and the third book (title not coming to mind) is due out early next year.

Currently Reading The Science of Discworld II: The Globe, which is a novellete on the Wizards of the UU messing with history coupled with a scientific study of history and humans. Also reading an Ancient Greek Comedy called Lysistrata, which is a horribly dirty story about Women who try to stop the war between Athens and Sparta by holding Athens' money hostage. Sex jokes and lewd comments abound.

The third part of The Viscount of Adrilankha is Sethra Lavode; it was originally going to be The Enchantress of Dzur Mountain, which I liked better as a title.

Still reading A History of Islamic Societies by Ira Lapidus. Good god this book is huge. (around 1000 pages) However it does have both interesting and inspiration stuff in it. I'm thinking about an (obviously not good) elven imperial power in my game world with human slave armies and a heavy bent towards astrology.

I'm also re-reading Robert Drews' The End of the Bronze Age: Changes in Warfare and the Catastrophe ca. 1200 B.C. which is a damned good book. Does a bunch of arguing against other theories trying to explain the destruction of so many cities and cultures at that time, and then puts forward his thesis that javelin-and-sword wielding heavy infantry took out the chariot armies of the established powers. Neat stuff.

Right now, I'm reading DeLint's The Onion Girl, the 'origin' of Jilly Coppercorn. It's OK, but I'm looking for something different and I might change at any time. I was very surprised to see him finally give Newford's population as six million! That's.. about six or twelve times as big as I was picturing it.

I just finished Talon of the Silver Hawk by Feist. It was a good read. I'm also about done with Seabiscuit, which is an interesting look at horse racing in the late 30's and early 40's.

I just finished A Scattering of Jades by Alexander Irvine, which was great. An Aztec god is let loose in 1860s New York City & Mammoth Cave, KY. I highly recommend it.

Now I'm working on Red Thunder by John Varley, finishing up Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, and just started on Shakey : Neil Young's Biography by Jimmy McDonough. Next up on the list is The Scar by China Mieville.

Have so far read The Crow Road and Whit by Iain Banks. Wonderful reads, both of them.

Shall be taking my copy of Eric by Terry Pratchett with me to York, for reference, and probably also Catch 22 which I've promised various people I'm finally going to read.
