Jungle Road Construction

I caught this episode of "Secrets of the Dead" on PBS a while back.

Bridge on the River Kwai

Details the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway through heavy jungle back in the 1940's. Lots of extremely hard work and lots of people died. Very harsh.

I'm currently reading War in the Pacific by Jerome Hagen. I'm on Vol II of III. The narrative is heavy on POW and attrocity stories. Ugly Stuff. The railway mentioned by Heckler was one of these. The loss of life and suffering was immense.

In short If your PCs are gonna physically hack their way through Jungle, plan on much suffering and pain and very slow going. I (totally) Guessing now -- with several hundred retainers working, a Mile per week?

Befriend/bribe/enslave/seduce a beholder (or a better yet, a dozen of them) and let him (them) disintegrate his (their) way through the jungle. :]
