Just got home from Thailand

So are you humble now? I heard one night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble.

Nah, I don't think so. One night in Bangkok just made me not like the place ;)

Luckily my current work has lots of holidays (5 weeks a year, 6 if I keep two weeks of it outside june-september, which I did). I'm planning on going again in fall, maybe september. My friends have been there in september, and said that weather isn't any more punishing than in may. And I know I can handle may weather.

Hopefully I can encourage my travel companion (the one who gets the cheap tickets) to go for 3 weeks. And no passport trouble this time, please. I would also like to check on my friend who's now staying there. You know, if he would like to leave the countryside and come enjoy Pattaya for a week or so :)

Thailand is great - been there often. I love the area around Chiang Mai - fell in love with that city the first time I saw it. (Plus, if you're a Mage fan, you get to visit the original Doissetep!) Bangkok is a bit busy for my taste, but I have to agree that the Floating Market is cool, as well as the Golden City. Pattaya is, er, a bit mad but well worth experiencing (so long as you look but don't touch!) I'm also very fond of Koh Samui and Koh Tao - the latter is more secluded than the former, but Samui is a lovely place that strikes a good balance between tourist amenities and island charm (give my regards to the Reggae Pub if you stop by!)

Gotta agree with the daft realisations that you wind up haggling furiously over 20 cents for a tuk-tuk ride. Crazy how such a little amount for a farang can make such a difference to a local. And, almost uniformly, the Thais are some of the friendliest, nicest folks I have ever met, from the islanders to those in the big cities to the Karen tribes up in the mountains.

I only just got back yesterday morning from two weeks in Disney World and am deep in the throes of jet lag, but all this talk of the land of smiles has me yearning to spend another 10 hours in a cramped plane, just to trail my toes in the Samui surf...

10 hours?! Geez, can I fly your airline? My flights total around 22 hours, one way!

I've thought about things lately, and come to the conclusion that I will go again in september.

If I don't get a travel companion, I will go alone. Thats a bit downer, but it's not like I'd be totally alone. There's a couple of finnish bars in Pattaya. I'm even prepared to pay full price for the tickets - 850 euros for Helsinki - Bangkok.

Just rambling here - I've was in school 19 years of my 27 years (basic, high school, uni). Now I've got the job I studied so long for, I have the vacations, I have the means to do it. Now's my time to enjoy life at last. And this is the way I'll do it.

Not by buying a house, getting a family and all that stuff some of my friends have chosen to spend their life on. Not just yet, at least :)

Well, I could probably finance a house and all that in addition to travelling, but I just happen to enjoy my life like this. For whatever reason my conscience just forces me to have reasons for spending a lot of money on travelling  :\

Just a small update:

September trip is confirmed. 3 weeks this time, from 1st to 21st. No plans yet, just the tickets. Well, first stop is Pattaya to meet some old friends and visit the finland bars (how stupid is that, travel 8000 km to go to a finnish bar? I got one 50 metres down the street  ).

It's nice to have something great to wait for :D
