Just how geeky are you anyway?

That test is not a good substitute for specifically listing your geeky traits, though! :)

Well, let's see...

  • I play D&D
  • I'm really into fantasy including all things Tolkien - I collect miniatures, fantasy toys, books on fantasy subjects, watch/collect fantasy movies etc
  • I collect dice and started the world's largest dice collectors' club (it's mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records - how geeky is that? :heh: )
  • I'm interested in 15th century European arms & armour and martial arts
  • I have several fantasy themed black T-shirts and a dragon themed belt

...but on the other hand:
  • I'm not bearded or very overweight (I'm on the official border between "normal" and "overweight")
  • I have a regular job
  • I have a girlfriend - and she's not a geek :p
  • I wear business casual clothes to work, i.e. I don't wear my black T-shirts often

I'm rated by the test as "Modern, cool Nerd: 82 % Nerd, 100% Geek, 34% Dork". I disagree.

Information:

Medical freak. I have a lot of odd things wrong with me, to the point of participating in several studies of rare anomalies.

Born without a sense of what "Shame" "Embarassment" or "Self-Consciousness" means. Immune t Peer Pressure Nonetheless, socially graceful, and frequently the "face of the company" to new clients.

In private: Academic. Went to an experimental invitation-only school for gifted kids. The top achievers in the district were invited to take the SAT in 7th grade. The top ten percent of that took an IQ test and what I believe was a modified Stanford 9s series test in 8th grade. The top ten scores there got into the school.

Geek Factors: 300+ RPG books in regular use. Owned several online roleplaying MUShes. Formed the first RPG club in my second college. Have a degree in Superman. Family is often addressed by Starfleet rank. Have frequently been involved in local Starfleets. Sometimes post things in Klingon, Quenya, or Kryptonese. Use phrases of same in random conversation. Do not curse... Instead, use "Great Krypton! Shazam! By The Ancient Gods Of Krypton! Frac!" and similar in public.

Between Superman and Trek, you have my core personality.

Wife and kids are mostly equally geeky. All three are in my gaming group as well. :)

I've got to add some estrogen to this discussion! :D

How geeky am I? I spend an inordinate amount of time on this forum. :p

I'm currently wearing a One Ring replica on a chain around my neck - openly, too, not hiding it under my blouse. I don't wear it every day, but I do wear it at least once a week.

I game at least once a week. I think about gaming quite a lot when I'm not actually playing. I design campaign settings for fun.

I paint miniatures as a hobby. I have never painted just one mini for a PC and then stuck with that same mini throughout an entire campaign. In one instance I painted at least 8 different figures for one character.

I attend a sci-fi/fantasy convention annually here in Portland, and when I can afford it I will go to other conventions in other cities. I've been to several Star Trek cons, although I've come to the conclusion that they're too expensive for what I get out of them. My dream would be to win the lottery and travel the world attending conventions at my whim.

I own a Starfleet uniform and have worn it in public (though I would not wear it for jury duty). I also own a variety of other costumes. I'm having a replica of a gown from one of the LOTR films made as my wedding gown.

I read almost exclusively fantasy literature. I used to read a lot of sci-fi but don't enjoy the hard science much. I used to collect comic books until the budget got too tight.

I used to collect action figures. I have a number of Marvel and DC "dolls". If the budget would permit I'd probably have a complete collection of LOTR action figures. Maybe a lot of Star Wars toys, too. I did not object to my fiancee having genre art in his house when I moved in with him. I added to the collection. :)

I played M:tG for a while, and have a collection of Heresy CCG cards.

I remember thinking when waiting for the first LOTR film to be released, "It would suck if I died before I got to see all 3 films". I guess I almost jinxed myself, because the following year I was diagnosed with cancer and barely was able to see the 3rd film in a theatre.

I watch most genre shows on tv, and see most genre films in the theatre. I can usually tell you quite a lot about the shows I enjoy, although I'm not likely to get into an argument with you over whether Kirk was a better captain than Picard, for example.

I'm teaching myself to speak Elvish.

Oh, yeah - I'm 45 years old, female, not married (yet), no kids, work for an insurance company, and have two college degrees.

I'm a geek.

I am unable to have conversations that are not about ideas. If someone tells me what foods they like, I start discussing the ingredients, how they work chemically, where they are from, what cultures they are associated with. If someone starts talking about their office politics, I begin asking sociological questions to see how these incidents fit into more general principles of social interaction, etc.

I am currently working on a PhD is religious history.

The last time I successfully courted a woman, Mikhail Gorbachev was head of the USSR.

I play role-playing and strategy games twice a week; they constitute my main social activity.

I have most of Monty Python memorized and, for years, had a near-complete collection of Dr. Who episodes that were aired in two hour instalments; I carefully put the every 25 minutes episode breaks back in.

Myers-Briggs says I'm an INTP.

I read Ron Ewdards' GNS theory and associated literature just so I could argue against it.

There are a bunch of geeky things I don't do. I got out of the software industry in 1995. I don't enjoy Star Trek (except, weirdly, for Voyager). I don't read fantasy or sci-fi (except for the two double-R authors). I only like two of the Star Trek films.

Final proof I'm a complete geek: when I was 9, I read CS Lewis's The Last Battle (the last book in the Narnia chronicles) and was upset by the ending -- how could everyone in Narnia enjoy the same quality of life they did before if all the dead were ressurrected but had to occupy and exploit the resources of the same area?

Joe Normal
34 % Nerd, 21% Geek, 8% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored less than half in all three, earning you the title of: Joe Normal.

This is not to say that you don't have some Nerd, Geek or Dork inside of you--we all do, and you can see the percentages you have right above. This is just to say that none of those qualities stand out so much as to define you. Sure, you enjoy an episode of Star Trek now and again, and yeah, you kinda enjoyed a few classes back in the day. And, once in a while, you stumble while walking down the street even though there was nothing there to cause you to trip. But, for the most part, you look and act fairly typically, and aren't much of an outcast.

I'd say there's a fair chance someone asked you to take this test. In any event, fairly normal.

Things that make me a geek:
  • I play D&D (this one pretty much goes without saying if I'm an EN World member)
  • I play World of Warcraft, a lot; I'll usually play 2-4 hours on weeknights unless I'm too busy, and on weekends and days off I usually play at least 8 hours (occasionally more).
  • I play a lot of video games in general.
  • I'm a Star Wars fan, and have read a few of the EU novels.
  • I'm a Lord of the Rings fan too, both the movies and the novels.
  • I'm a moderate Star Trek fan. I like the original series, the Next Generation, and some of the movies.
  • I've read quite a bit of fan fiction over the years, and even tried my hand at writing it.
  • I read a lot of fantasy novels.
  • There are several anime series and movies that I consider myself a fan of.
Things that detract from my geekiness:
  • I shower every day and wear deoderant.
  • I'm clean shaven.
  • I don't have a ponytail.
  • I'm neither overweight nor scrawny.
  • Although I'm not a real big sports fan, I don't have the knee-jerk hatred of sports and those who play them that many geeks do.
  • I was not picked on by jocks in high school. I actually stood up for myself.
  • I may not have girls fighting over me, but I do fairly well when it comes to getting dates.
  • I only own a few comic books.
  • I've never been to a geek-related convention nor do I really desire to go to any (although I would go to E3 or BlizzCon if given the opportunity :) ).
  • I've never LARPed, nor do I ever desire to.
  • I don't watch anime intended for adolescent girls, nor do I watch anime tentacle-porn.
  • Furries give me the creeps.
