Just how geeky are you anyway?

Just how geeky are you, anyway? I mean, this is ENWorld, so presumably everyone here is into D&D enough to post about it on a messageboard online, but other than that? At one end of the spectrum we have "I play D&D and watch the occasional anime or sci-fi themed TV show," and at the other we have "I report for jury duty in my Starfleet uniform."

To get the ball rolling, obviously I play D&D. I don't watch much sci-fi, and have actually never liked Star Trek. I like Star Wars well enough, but I avoid the novels, conventions and Internet discussion groups. I most certainly did not camp out for tickets to any premieres of any movies in a Boba Fett or stormtrooper costume. I think my level of Star Wars fandom is within mainstream levels. I post a lot about D&D and RPGs here, on Nothingland and on rpg.net, but that's more a strategy for coping with ennui at work than because I'm such a die-hard gamer.

I don't have a typical geeky appearance or social habits; I'm married with kids, have lots of mainstream social interaction, I'm only about 25 lbs. or so overweight tops, have a mainstream professional job and an MBA, don't have long hair or a beard, and don't even own more than one or two black t-shirts.

On the other hand, eight or nine years ago, I wrote a novella length fanfic based on the characters of the Street Fighter series of arcade games. And this wasn't just a phase I went through when I was younger; I've actually seriously considered writing another one adding in characters from the King of Fighters and Fatal Fury series as well. My own little Capcom vs. SNK fanfic, if you will. In fact, I've even typed up some notes and three or four introductory chapters. It'll probably just peeter out anyway, but the point is, it's still a geeky hobby of mine.

So, how geeky are you?

And no, I did not make an author cameo as Chun Li's sex toy in that fanfic...

i convinced my wife to camp out with me to be one of the first in the country to see the D&D movie.
That's not geeky, that's just... sad.

For what it's worth, my wife took me to see the Street Fighter movie for my birthday--I think it came out that week. Another debacle there too.

I love D&D and play M:tG,I watched Star Trek and have seen the movies, I love Star Wars and saw them all in the theaters when they originally showed (a few midnight showings). I am a computer programmer/web deevloper. I love hard core science fiction (Dark City and Event Horizon) and fantasy.

Aside from being a fatbeard (and here in Arkansas, we abound) the casual observer would never know me for a geek. I love Star Trek, but have never worn a uniform (the jury duty person Joshua mentioned is from Arkansas, by the way). I don't read the novels, but I love the "technical" manuals. I still have my first edition Starfleet Technical Manual and Enterprise Blueprints from when I was a kid!

I love Star Wars, but I don't read the novels. I actually read surprisingly little fantasy or science fiction anymore (ate it up like candy as a kid, though). I watch very little sci-fi on TV, as well. I love the new Battlestar Galactica more than cake, but I have only a passing interest in the Stargate series, and I've watched less than 20 minutes of both Angel and Buffy combined.

I play D&D and a handful of other RPG's, never played any of the collectible card games, and know a lot of stuff about paleontology, archaeology, and hard rock and heavy metal from the 70's and 80's. The first place I go in a bookstore is the sci/fi section (cuz that's where RPG's seem to be located usually), but actively avoid talking to other browsers in the same sections; mostly because I don't want them telling me all about how their characters evicted the Norse pantheon for not paying them tribute, etc.

So I guess on a geek scale, I'm pretty low. D&D is my far and away favorite hobby, but outside of my house, my gaming group and immediate family, and the faceless multitude here on ENWorld, ya'd just never know it. My son actually makes it a point to inform people of my hobbies far more often than I do.

Poor Diaglo!! :(

I have been to one Star Trek Convention and a few Gen Cons. I have never worn a constume. I have read some Forgotten Realms and Star Wars novels.

5'11" and 160lbs - nothing overtly geeky there? Tall, Dark and Duck like!

I don't think I'm your typical geek. I don't fit the fatbeard stereotype, even though I do have a beard. I'm not overweight, am married, and have a kid. I have a great imagination, which is why I play D&D. I like Sci-Fi and fantasy but hate to read books on the subject. I find most of them boring. Some aren't and I enjoy them, but most are to me. I like Star Trek a lot but have never read a ST book, dressed up like a character, or anything like that. I like Star Wars but....see Star Trek.

I have a sense of humor about myself and others, as should be appalingly obvious by now, so I'm not the typical "I'm offended you don't understand me" geek.

I'm a geek and I'm proud of it, but I think it's mainly for things like playing D&D, liking fantasy and sci-fi movies, and loving trivia (and not just about fantasy or sci-fi but on every topic).

Oh and I watch the Friday night block on Sci-Fi so that helps. ;)

Let’s see I play D&D, Munchkin, I own all the video Game Systems. I watch G-4 TV. I Read all types of fantasy, dork tower, F.F.N, Knight of the diner table, and Conan and a bunch more comics. I work at a video store for the free rentals. I and my friends work as hard as we can to make gaming related Humor. I a member of the D20 Junkies. I also a member for 4 different gaming boards. I have an easer time of spelling Necromancer then I do “enter almost any easy word here”. I am a master of costumes. And I ask October 8 off of work so I can game all day long and watch the D&D movie 2. (Also I will be watching Kingdom of haven, Unleashed, and Bionoacols 3 that weekend) Also I huge star wars fan.
