Just how powerful is the Martian Manhunter?

Also it depends on which Superman we are talking about.

The 1970's-1980's Superman was far stronger than the Martian Manhunter. The 1970's Superman was strong enough to push the planet earth.

Krypton's gravity, in most of the stories, was supposed to be comparable to Jupiter's gravity. Tremendously higher than the gravity of Mars, so Superman had to be far stronger just to survive on Krypton.

In the most recent revision of Superman's origin, they have played down the gravity angle and are now focusing on Superman getting his powers from the yellow sun.

We must talk current versions, since the pre-Crisis Martian Manhunter was very different (he even protected the martian people in Mars II... hardly a loner, anymore).

Besides, if we talk old versions, Supes pounded on Martian Manhunter in that one crossover comic that DC had that was like Marvel Team up, but with Superman meeting a new guest every month instead of Spider Man. It was one of the old issues where Mongul is like, "Get me War World or X and so dies!" and MM was guardian it and Supes in his arrogance basically beat him down and thought he could take Mongul (also pre-crisis Mongul).

Good stuff.

I'd place MM in the 2nd place as Most Powerful Alien On Earth. I've often thought that he had the best set of powers in the DC Universe. If I could have one set of super-abilities, it would be his. :)

MM comes after Spectre and Dr. Fate (Cosmic Odissey, anyone?). Other than that, I can't really see anyone else standing up against him if he flips out (no Plastic Man, please).

Well, the way he's been written, Plastic Man could do it.

And depending on if we go "fire demon' aspect from JLA, if we don't, realistically Flash, Green Lantern (Hal of course!), and quite a few others. In looking at the Flash, if run as he is in his own comic 98% of the time, he's basically unbeatable.

Oh yeah, and Lobo. Can't forget about Lobo.

And based on some of her recent apperances, Zantana. Another magical power house whose downplayed way too much.

given his vulnerability to fire, Superman could take him pretty easily with his heat vision. Heat vision aside, it might be a pretty good fight, but ultimately Superman is more powerful.

But that's not to say that MM couldn't get his hands on a little kryptonite, and bring down Supes. Don't forget that MM kept a secret file on all the members of the JLA, so he knew how to take down each and every one.

Let's put it this way:

In the graphic novel JLA: Earth 2, by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Martian Mahunter takes out the entire Crime Sindicate of Amerika, which are villainous versions of Superman (Ultraman), Wonder Woman (Superwoman), Batman (Owlman), Green Lantern (Power Ring) and Flash (Johnny Quick). Aquaman helped a bit, IIRC, with either Power Ring or Johnny Quick.

Yes, but in that instance there was a "universal law" (since repealed, thankfully) that said the CSA couldn't win.... :uhoh:

Er... that was Batman.

Which is cooler--the fact that the guy that plays Dixon on Alias also plays Martian Manhunter or the fact that the guy that plays Martian Manhunter also plays Dixon on Alias?

edit: Holy crap! IMDB says he was also in Buckaroo Bonzai!
