Just picked up RIFTs for the first time since 1993 ...

... and god it's awful.

Back when I was 16 I guess I was overwhelmed by the overall coolness of the art and the PA concept. I remember tweaking the rules back then to get it to a runnable state, but I didn't remember it being this much of a train wreck. RIFTs Ultimate Edition is about a clear and readable as sanscript. I read through the combat section 5 times and still could not clearly figure out how a 3-4 player versus 5-6 monster combat could ever work. Why are the rules to roll with missiles different then other things ? Why can I dodge lasers ? Why are important constant rules buried in nondescript paragraphs (to do X you must always roll above 12 on d20) ? Why does this thing looks like it was laid out on an Apple IIe ? I mean put this, and the PHB down in front of a new player and see how quickly you can get a game going. Why are miniature rules non-existant ? It's 2007 ... people use combat grids and maps for combat. And most of all this is pretty much the same document I bought in 92 (?) with a less cool cover, glad I only paid $8.00 for it in the bargain bin at my local comic shop.

Does anyone play this relic anymore ? Is there a D20 conversion, or a step-by-step combat guide with all the charts, bell curves, modifiers and flowcharts to resolve combat ?

Ned, welcome to the boards. You'll find that you'll get a much better response if you don't start a thread by essentially saying, "Hey! Everyone who loves RIFTS! Come fight with me!"

Because that's essentially what you just did.

We'll be watching this thread. If folks want to talk about how they think RIFTs is cool, that's great, but I don't expect anyone to make personal attacks on the original poster. And as always, please report a post if anyone makes an offensive one.

I have considered trying to take the story / concept of RIFTS and make it either D20 or Modern D20 but I am just too lazy...........

and I have too many ideas to run in regular fantasy DnD.

Did Pallidium ever get ther finiances straightened out? Last I knew there was a report of being in monetary trouble.

Your post is the same thing I've read about a hundred times on RPGnet and other sites. It's old.

Yawn.

I agree with you nedleeds, Rifts has cool art, a cool setting, but a terrible system. It would be great if there was a d20 version but unfortunately that will never happen. Kevin Siembieda seems to think that if he does Rifts d20 it means that WotC will then own Rifts. Palladium is extremely litigious, threatening the owners of internet fan sites with legal action, which means it's impossible to even do a non-profit online conversion.

Good point. I guess I should have prefaced it by stating that I once greatly enjoyed the game and was thrilled to see a big buff hard cover edition staring me in the face for $15 (US). After flipping through it, the setting, the art, and some of the fluff text got me excited about maybe playing again. It was buried back on page 350-something that my head started to hurt. I'm sure there is quality material in the tome somewhere and was more or less looking for some pointers or tips for running it - from the perspective of somebody comfortable with D20 and with using miniatures for combat.

Yes. What I should have done before posting is google RIFTS d20. I stumbled on all kinds of flamewar threads, threads about the near bankruptcy of the company and all kinds of fun stuff. Most of all the pervading theme seemed to be that any community material surrounding RIFTs is hard to come by due to the intense ip protection from PG.

Well for any people who do enjoy the rules out of the box a few things.

1) Does Palladium produce a core rules guide that just hashes out combat, movement, actions etc. ?

2) Is there anything resembling grid based combat in RIFTs ?

I did notice PG put out a line of RIFTs miniatures, I would think that corresponding rules would be available for said product.

Thanks !

I've had some fun RIFTS memories, but they all occured because I was willing to go outside of the Rules-As-Written and make my own rulings... which is essentially what you've got to do to really play the game.

if you want RIFTS d20, start with d20 Apocalypse and just add stuff from whatever d20 sources you feel like. You've pretty much got the entire game right there.
