Another hate-filled vote for 'toon. I never heard it until my landlord's gf was talking about it, and it took me a while to realise it. And... it really, really irks me. I can't explain why.

I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of toon either. And I also can't quite pin down the reason. I think it partly has to do with the harsh sound of it. It just seems to be jarring in normal speech.

Well, TV tropes calls all characters that have the usual set of superman powers "flying bricks"

My theory is that people don't like "toon" because it heavily reinforces the "game-y", childish aspects of the hobby. Words like "Character" and "Avatar" are much more pretentious/intellectually-serious.
