"Keeping" feats?

I always ruled that with feats (and going against the core rules, prestige classes) you had to meet the prerequisits first, and you must take your feats the level they became available. This represents the fact that your character is always evolving, sometimes not in the way that you had planned. When was the last time in real life that you performed exactly the way you wanted to?
