See if you can take this feat to boost your mount some:
Wild Cohort
Speaking of barding, you might want to have it enchanted with the Easy Travel enhancement from MIC.
There's also the Collar of Healing that gives you a swift action heal for your mount only that heals 50hp. MIC89
the BattleBridle gives you a bonus to Ride and the feat Mounted Combat (or Ride-by Attack if you already have Mounted Combat) MIC151
