Kevin Smith (Ares from Xena) dead

I truly enjoyed Kevin Smith's work. While he often ham-fisted the character's persona of Ares, I think that's what was written, and was fitting for the series, the Greek Gods in that "universe" were haughty and in a sense unidimensional caricatures of personality traits.

My favorite Kevin Smith appearance was in the Hercules episode set in modern times, where all the actors of the show were playing the writers of the Hercules tv series. His character was a camouflage wearing, tobacco chewing redneck gun-nut with the heart of a cowardly lion. He managed to convey all of that information in a thumbnail's worth of dialogue and screen presence.

I'm saddened by news of his passage.

Too bad.

I don't know that guy. I don't even know who he is. People die every day - every minute. Why oh why does they only mention "celebrities" in the news? On the websites? In the radio? Are they important? Of course they are! Are they better than everyone else - no way! They are no better humans than you, me or that poor kid who died in some exotic fever far far away. Why aren't he in the news? Are this Kevin dude better and more worthy sa a human than this particular kid?

No way.

As pointed out by another poster, there are obituaries. And like it or not, it is a news item. One I wish I didn't have to hear about, but myself and others like me who did like the actor, thought he did a great job, DO want to know about it when it happens. And the kid that dies from a tragic, uncommon illness often does make the news, especially when he's battled long and hard and his family has campaigned for help and donations from the story. Or how about the five-year-old child that died in the house fire after starting the fire himself. He made the news. I wish NONE of them had to make the news. I wish they were all healthy and happy and with their loved ones.

Favorite Xena moments. Yeah, I loved the gun-toting modern character!! He was hilarious. Regular Ares, and high-pitched, girly-girl Areas.

And that scene with the Evil Nebula in the alternate world...purrrr...I've carried a bit of a torch for the guy for a couple of years. It's weird to think about it now, and it does sound funny...downright weird how he died, but I suppose that's my inclination towards paranoia more than anything else. I wonder if it will hit the North American media.

Damn. He was pretty cool, I liked Ares. I feel bad now. I hate when people die so young, especially by accident, it's really sad.

If you see the scene in Bitter Suite (the best hour of TV in history, IMO) where he attempts to seduce Xena to the "War" side, it really does showcase his talent.

Ashtal - AFAIK, he was HUGE with the ladies. (well, no pun intended ;) ) All _I_ read, the ladies loved him.

Well I had lost my ISP for a while and am just getting back. I hadn't heard about this til now. My heart kind of sank because I thought he was a pretty cool actor and I also thought for sure that he was gonna be a helluva lot more popular after xena (and hercules). It is truly a sad loss. May he rest in peace.
