hi guys. i decided on a new campaign for the players. we're going to be set in greyhawk before the time the castle ruins were first delved. it wont be a travel thru time sort of thing. it will be set there and then, before greyhawk became a prosperous city. we will be among the first in, and will be associating with tenser, mordenkainen, robilar, etc. from first level on. sometimes we will be competitors, sometimes exploring together as adventuring companions.

i am even thinking of having gord, gellor, chert, and curley greenleaf make appearances.

total nostalgia campaign.

anyone ever do this? setting is 3rd edition, but any advice or experiences of any system is appreciated and can be helpful.

also does anyone know where stats, etc for those guys can be found at lower levels? i seem to remember seeing them somewhere but like 20 yrs ago.

i'd like to keep it as close to gygax's original as possible. does anyone know if the new harcover ruins of cstle greyhawk book's overview of the general structure of the castle's dungeons is true to gygax? how about the old module wgr1 greyhawk ruins? is that accurate?

thanks.

To get Gygax's original dungeon - or as near as we're going to get - look to the upcoming Castle Zagyg from Troll Lord Games. At present, they've released "Yggsburgh", which describes a town Gary created to use instead of Greyhawk, and also "The East Mark Gazeteer", which has a preview of what will be in "The Upper Works", the top levels of the CZ dungeons. In particular, "The Mouths of Madness", a bunch of caves that lead into the castle proper.

I'm currently running "The Mouths of Madness" for my friends (using 4e) and we're have a fine time. See my livejournal for more information.

The full "Upper Works" is due out about Gen Con. TLG wants to release the entire Castle, but each release takes time to prepare.

Cheers!

Some of the links on my pages @ http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_castle.html should be useful.

Lowest published levels appear in the 1e module WG5 Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure by Rob Kuntz, but even then Mordy's 12th and Bigby's 10th or so IIRC.

You'll have to follow Merric's advice here, unless you plan to build Gary's version yourself, since very little official material about the original Castle has been published. You may also want to check out Rob Kuntz's Bottle City and Original Living Room books @ http://www.pied-piper-publishing.com/ since they're both excerpted from the original castle.

I hope that helps?
