Kids and Guns

I have no kids yet, so I'll recount my own boyhood story.

My dad introduced me to guns when I was 9 or 10 years old, I think. Every weekend, he would let us kids go to the firing range with him and his friends (they belonged to a club.) Maybe, just maybe, if we had been really good and cleaned our rooms and finished our homework, he would let us fire a few rounds from his favorite practice rifle (a Browning 7mm).

When I was 12, he gave me a single-shot .22 target rifle for my birthday. And for my 16th, he gave me a lever-action .410 that he built himself.

I got into competitive shooting a bit in high school, but I never cared too much for hunting. And the pseudo-militaristic "survivalist" lifestyle is so prevalent where I grew up...it sort of soured my appreciation for the sport.

Nowadays, I go to the range every couple of months to keep my aim sharp, and I'm always looking on eBay for a good deal on a nice rifle, but I wouldn't consider myself a "gun nut." And when the day comes for me to teach my own children about fireams, I will do it the way my dad taught me...through the sport of competitive marksmanship.

I don't have any kids, but everyone in my family and in my wife's family are gun owners. I know that *all* of the kids have been instructed that they are absolutely not to handle a gun without adult supervision.

I believe that I was about 9 when I was first instructed in the use of a gun. That seems to be about the age that most in my family are first taught to handle guns. And in a lot of cases their first gun is given to them at about 12 or 13.

Isn't there anyone who fears and despises the freedom and ease with which about anyone can own firearms?

I'm sure there are. Then you have the folks that don't fear and love the fact that not only can you own firearms, but you have the freedom to speak, pray, report, petition and assemble. That you have privacy in your home, due process, trial by jury, limitations on federal power, abolition of slavery and womens suffrage, just to name a few. Of course, you also have that whole pesky income tax thing, buy hey, can't win them all. :)

I've done it with my nieces and nephews, all in the 7-11 year old range. I have guns in my house and rather than act like they are some big secret or something, we get it out of the way early on when they visit. Here's a gun, here's what it looks like, here's how it feels, here's how it works, that kind of thing. I've never taken them shooting, but always end with "if you want to see the guns, just ask me and we can take them out, if you want to go shooting, let me know and we can go to the range". Beyond that, it's up to them if they want to do more or not. If they do, great. If not, I don't bring it up till the visit again and it's time for a rules refresher. My experience is the more stigma that people put on things, the more children are curious about things. Remove the mysticism and such and it becomes something that's normal, and frankly, no big deal.

Did you read the mod warning? Any reaction I can come up to this would either further violate the board rules or... well, would make me warning you about the forum rules!

Interested in political discussions with other role-players and many (former) ENWorlders, look here: http://www.circvsmaximvs.com/

Nope. I start top down and work through the threads. I'm not sure what you are talking about, but I'm sure I'll get to it.

Just did. If I was more cynical I'd think the 1000+ posters were trying to bait a response like the one I provided from newbies. Either way though, you won't need to worry about me responding to you or this thread anymore. I'm not interested in political discussions, I was simply answering a silly question with a list of all the great things that exist in the US Constitution and trying to answer the OP's original question (which was clearly a mistake in hindsight).

Back to the strictly gaming forum sections for me.

What, owning firearms is the same as the fundamental rights of the citizen? The same as owning, dunno, a book?

Oh, well, actually, after reading the rest I'll stop here in order to not get banned.
