Kill Bill - part 1

I'm willing to bet that both volumes will clock in at a little over 90 minutes despite what is being said so far. I can totally understand the studio freaking a little at a 3+ hour movie being released. Sure, the hardcore folks will see it at that long but not the general public. I'm fine either way - I just want to see it. :)

Very true, if we only learn one thing from Titanic and the LOTR films, its that nobody but hard core fans of the director will pay to see a three hour film. ;)

Different types of films. LotR could have been 4 hours and still done the same numbers. Titanic is about a subject with MASS APPEAL and yes the caps are warranted. Those are the exception not the rule.

It still doesn't matter, because a 90 minute Kill Bill is still going to cater mostly to Tarantino fans. To the casual movie going public it just looks like a dark parody of Charlie's Angels, which isn't exactly box office gold. Whether its 90 or 180 minutes, its appeal is still to the Tarantino crowd. I've never heard of poor performance at the box office being attributed to the length. Never.

If a film is good and the people who see it recommend it to there friends and/or go see it again, it will make money, whether its 90 or 180 minutes. You say Titanic and LOTR are the exceptions; that would be true if there was a plethora of three hour films and those were the only two that were successful.

But that isn't the case. Studios don't like long films not because the public won't pay to see them but because it means less showings per day and fewer times each day to charge for tickets. That's it.

If a movie needs three hours to be told and its a good story they release it that way. The fact that Miramax is cutting it in two either suggests they simply want to capitalize on multiple sequel mania (LOTR, Matrix R & R, Riddick goofiness) and force it into two parts to fleece the fans, or they simply don't think its a good enough film to warrant the staying power that would cancel out the fewer showings per day. Either way, its not a good thing.

Muchly looking forward to this. Should be great. Kung-fun action, good dialogue, good people involved...:D Can't wait.

While I really can't blaim you, because a good friend of mine recently thought that Hong Kong was in Japan, I need to chime in here and say that it won't be Kung Fun action, but rather Kempo-wesome action, cause it looks to be set in Japan, not China. Or maybe Kendo-mazing action, I saw alot of swords being used. It should be Karate-ctular! Probably not Sumo-licious, didn't see any fat dudes =)

Oh, and this whole "split the film into two parts and make twice the money" thing kinda makes me sick =P But I'll shell out 12 bucks instead of 6. You guys that pay 10 bucks a movie need to move to the midwest.

Is it me, or are we seeing sequels coming out earlier than normal?
Movies don't stay around as long as they use to; a hit the first week, second week 50% take of first week, third week 50% of that, fourth week running about a mill, 5th week gone from the screen.

I sort of predicted this (yep, it was I :)) with the sucess of Lord of the Rings, more and more movies would be produced with built-in sequels. It is just cheaper to do multible movies, the second release timed when the first hits the DVD market, to keep interest.

I can't say that I'm really psyched about this movie, or that it looks that good, but I'll probably see it anyway.

The yellow jumpsuit (a bow to Bruce Lee's outfit in Game of Death costume) does make me more eager to see the film, though.

Actually, parts of the movie take place in both japan AND china. When the bride goes to get her katana she goes to Sonny Chiba's character Hattori Hanzo in Japan to have it made.

During her training to be part of Bill's group of assassins, he takes her to mainland china to be trained by Priest Pai-Mei. the same Pai Mei from Executioners from Shaolin and the beginning of Fists of the White Lotus. Except this time instead of being played by Lo Lieh he's being played by Gordon Lui who's character in Fists of the White Lotus kills Pai Mei during the opening credits of that movie.

True, there's no Sammo Hung, but the fights have been cheoreographed by Yuen Woo Ping. Although I have to say that Uma looks a little stiff in her fight scenes.

I was interested in seeing this movie right up until Weinstein decided to fleece the public by convincing Tarintino to split the film in two. Now I couldnt care less...
