Killing a NPC slowly

How about using Vile or Unholy damage, from the Book of Vile Darkness?

Unholy damage can only be healed by magical healing, but Vile healing cannot be healed unless it's in an area that's hallowed or concecrated (I think). So, he could be hit with a weapon doing Vile damage, and the PCs simply Can Not Heal Him.

Depending on the level of your PCs, a clay golem would do very nicely.

Vile damage would work, and there's even a spell that creates a +2 shortspear for short duration that deals all damage as vile damage.

As for unholy, that can be healed in any fashion. It just only affects good or non-evil creatures, depending on the source.

Your NPC could have been reduced to -10 hit points, but he hasn't died yet.

He is a goner, beyond medical attention and magical healing (or say beyond magical healing lower than HEAL), but he can still talk for a few seconds to give information.

Or, I like the suggestion above about failing his massive damage saving throw.

Maybe the enemy speared him through the intestines, and his death is certain within the next half hour.

Keeping with the intestines, perhaps they were torn out, or some kind of organ <i>needed</i> was removed, and thus the PCs can't heal that.

I also like the poison idea, a con reducing poison that he got hit with a minute ago dropping him to say a con of 3 or 4 then he says his last words and the secondary con damage kicks in taking him to a con of 0 and killing him, no healing spells are going to help and if they don't know he's poisoned they will prolly not cure the poison and also be suprised when he up and drops dead after being healed of most if not all of his damage. hehehe

"the jade falcon is the key to the evil clerics empire...." thud. uhhh.. could the cleric explain why this guy just dropped dead?
