has the OP not come back to post? he hasn't answered the question as to what he expects the PLAYER to do for 5-8 games??
No, he hasn't come back. His last post was #12 in this thread. I don't think he wanted helpful suggestions about how to keep the game going, or how not to ruin the game for the player, or a discussion on morality, I think he was just hoping a lot of people would agree with his position, so he could punish the players with a clear conscience. A lot of people didn't, so he's lost interest in this thread.

and is there any rule that lets the gods punish a cleric or paliden in 5e?
It's left entirely to the DM. The idea that, for example, a paladin instantly loses all his powers if he commits a single evil act goes back to AD&D and continued through 2e. It was actually in the rules. By 3.5e alignment shift was gradual and it was at least possible for a paladin to atone. Now, in 5e alignment is less of a thing, the rules are less draconian and it's really a case of "what makes a fun story?".

Not for many pages.
And seriously, after reading some of these replies, why should they respond? Would you?

Of course it's also possible that you were all well trolled.

Either way, since its an alignment debate I bet this thread hits 25+ pages.

Alternatively, they could be busy and not have time to check this forum on a regular basis, maybe he even forgot his password. I know I've done that on new accounts.

It would be a little easier to assign positive intent if the OP didn't present himself as an inflexible, punitive DM determined to present the group with a game they don't want to play and pass responsibility for the decision off on a handful of dice.

It looks like a troll. It smells like a troll. It didn't come back once flames were applied.

Honestly, that just looks like a typical DM post to me. I think a lot of DMs start off inflexible in no small part because they don't know enough about how the rules affect the game, and fear that straying from the rules will result in everybody getting upset.

Yeah, I was 12 or 13 when I started DMing and probably made DMing decisions that would make me cringe in retrospect until my early 20s. It takes time learning how to DM properly, plus emotional/intellectual maturity, to become a really good DM.

If the OP has chosen not to respond, I certainly can't blame him. There has been a lot of good advice, but there has also been some posters who were more personal about their remarks than others.

Plus there's a large group of players that promotes playing by the letter of the rules is the proper way to play.

It's a viable option, but new DM's need to know it's not the only option. More importantly they need to understand the style of play is set by the group, not them. And even though they might think that's the style they want, it often changes when they learn what that really means. Although in this case I think it's just a bit to far...
