Killing Gods

If you are looking for some pretty good stuff about what happens after a god dies - you may want to look at Requiem for a God by Malhavoc (IIRC).

Right. Well then I do believe presently that if the events in Dragons of Vanished Moon are right, both Paladine and Tahkisis are dead. (Gilean I think went off to mourn and isn't coming back.)

Moander was killed by Finder.

Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul died, Cyric took over their spheres of influence. However Cyric lost much of Bane portfolio and some of Myrkul's due to his own incompentence and arrogance.

Actually, in Dragons of a Vanished Moon, both Takhisis and Paladine are made mortal. (The gods of Krynn agree to remove Takhisis from the list, but for the purposes of balance, one good deity must accept mortality.) Takhisis is killed when she becomes mortal by the elven king Silvanoshei and Paladine remains as a mortal elf on Krynn who calls himself Valthonis.

The drow godess of vengeance and undeath, Kiaransalee, killed Orcus, the demon prince of undeath and took his portfolio.

Though it seems that Orcus has risen again . . .

Orcus never really "died". What really happened was detailed in an adventure module a while back, I can't recall the source. But on the subject...

That story of Loki killing Baldur is highly disputed. Many consider it to be a false addition made later on. And, IMO, it never happened, because Baldur is in the Marvel Comics version of Thor, and that's the end of that. :D

Cyric did lose portfolios to Bane and Kelemvor, but he gained as much as he lost from Mask and Lliira, IIRC. His current portfolios fit much better for his style. As long as you ignore the crappy novels set in the Realms, Cyric is a very impressive and devious villianous deity.

Tyche used to be the Goddess of Luck, (just Luck, not bad or good), but then Lathander started a war for dominance over the rest of the Gods of the Faerun, during which time Tyche was corrupted by Moander. She visited Selune, who recognized the corruption, and blasted her with some holy light, which resulted in Tyche splitting off into the two seperate entities known as Beshaba and Tymora.

I believe Hoar killed one of the gods of the Mulhorandi Pantheon, but was unable to lay claim to his portfolios, as another God of that Pantheon stole them from him before he could do so himself.

Mystra is killed by Helm during the Time of Troubles. Midnight absorbs some of her power, and becomes the new Mystra (abandoning her old name) when Ao raises her to godhood at the end of the Time of Troubles.

Bane and Torm kill each other in battle during the Time of Troubles. Shortly thereafter, Torm is resurrected by Ao at the end of the Time of Troubles. Bane comes back fourteen years later, bursting forth from his divine son, Iyachtu Xvim.

Bhaal is slain by the mortal Cyric during the Time of Troubles, who was unknowingly wielding Mask, who had taken the form of a sword, which was later called Godsbane before being revealed as an aspect of Mask.

Myrkul is slain by a disintegration spell from Midnight during the Time of Troubles, using Mystra's power to make the spell able to overcome his potent divine defenses.

Ibrandul, god of caverns and caves, is slain during the Time of Troubles by Shar, goddess of darkness, who is jealous that any other god would dare to laim claim to the portfolio of darkness.

Leira is killed by Cyric shortly after the end of the Time of Troubles. Lured to Pandemonium by her only friend, Mask, Cyric slew her, took her portfolio, and hid the deed for almost a decade before Mystra called upon Ao to reveal the truth of the matter.

Moander, god of corruption, is slain by Finder Wyvernspur in the years preceding the Time of Troubles (iirc), using the power of the artifact known as the Finder's Stone. Finder absorbs some of Moander's portfolio (namely rot to rebirth), and becomes a minor deity. The rest of Moander's portfolio goes to Lolth.

Osirus is slain by the evil god Set. However, Osirus's wife Istus, with the help of Nephythus, Set's wife who left him in horror over what he did, raise him as an undead god.

Kiaransalee slew Orcus (who in 2E was understood, along with several other demon lords, to have become a god. 3E has recanted this, saying none of them ever became deities) sometime very shortly after the Time of Troubles. Orcus rose from the dead a few years later and barely managed to return to life, reclaiming his home in the Abyss.

Aoskar somehow managed to enter Sigil, the City of Doors, however, the Lady of Pain, who already ruled the city, slew him with her might for entering her domain.

The illithid god Maanzecorian was slain by Tenebrous, the name Orcus took during his time as an undead being, using the power of the Last Word.

Tomeri, a goddess of love and wisdom, was slain by Tenebrous, the name Orcus took during his time as an undead being, using the power of the Last Word.

Camaxtli, god of fate and secrets, was slain by Tenebrous, the name Orcus took during his time as an undead being, using the power of the Last Word.

The Untheric god Gilgeam was slain by Tiamat shortly after the end of the Time of Troubles.

The Finnish goddess Kipptyetto (I know I misspelled this) was slain by Talona in a battle over identical portfolios.

The Sumerian deity Enki was slain by the Babylonian deities Nergal and Anshar.

Tyche, goddess of good and ill luck, was "slain" when Selune, sensing corruption in her due to Moander, split her in twain, cutting her into the two deities Tymora and Beshaba.

Iyachtu Xvim died recently when Bane burst forth from him.

In order to avoid dying, Zandilar the Dancer, a very minor divine being, joined with Bast, turning her into the goddess Sharess.

Takhisis (along with Paladine to maintain balance) is made mortal by the collective will of the Krynnish pantheon. She is then slain by the elf prince Silvanoshei (who is himself then slain by Mina).

Zinzerena, a minor drow goddess of assassination, seems to have been killed by Lolth, who absorbed her portfolio and identity.

Several deities from the world of Aebrynis (of the Birthright campaign) died fighting Azrai, god of evil (who also died) in the battle as Mt. Deismaar.

Re (not a true god, but an incarnation of Ra sent through wildspace due to a divine block by the Imaskari Empire) and several other Mulhorandi deities, were slain by avatars of the Orcish pantheon. Re's essence was absorbed by Horus, later resulting in him becoming the god Horus-Re.

Amauntor was a Netherese sun deity who, being very lawful neutral in nature, found himself contractually bound for unknown reasons not to be able to stop the fall of Netheril. He died from lack of worship later.

Karsus, the Momentary God, was a Netherese archmage who drained power from Toril's original goddess of Magic, Mystryl, to become a god himself with her power. Mystryl, however, sacrificied herself to prevent Karsus from doing permanent harm to the Weave, and in doing so Toril lost all magic for a few minutes, which resulted in Karsus dying. Mere minutes later, a new goddess of magic, the first Mystra, arose.

Hoar killed a Mulhorandi god (I can't recall which one), but was unable to claim his portfolio before another deity (who I again cannot recall) did.

That's just what I can recall off the top of my head, though I know I missed some. Hope that helps!
